The hunt for missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 entered a new phase Monday with the resumption of underwater search efforts for the aircraft that mysteriously vanished en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing six months ago.
Until now experts had been concentrating on mapping the seabed in the southern Indian Ocean search zone where the plane carrying 239 people is believed to have crashed.
The Malaysian-contracted GO Phoenix vessel, the first of three search ships, has now arrived in the area and is scanning the ocean floor for the jet, the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) said.
Two additional vessels equipped with sonar, video cameras and jet-fuel sensors will join the GO Phoenix in coming weeks. Each ship will be staffed with 25-35 people working around the clock exploring the 23,000 square-mile search area.
The Oceans average depth of 2.5 miles has complicated recovery efforts.

(31,930 posts)Most parts of a jet float. They have found nothing. Aviation experts can't explain it.

(13,460 posts)wouldn't some kind of wreckage eventually wash up on land somewhere? Or in an area where someone would see it, shipping lane or something?
former9thward
(31,930 posts)And that is why experts have been confounded by it. There is no way the whole plane could have just sunk. Hitting the ocean surface is like hitting concrete for a plane and it would have broke up into many parts -- and that is not counting all the baggage and bodies.

(31,930 posts)This happened in the middle of the night. The sea would be be nothing but black with no points of reference. Hudson occurred from a very low altitude and low speed. Nothing comparable. And if some did land it that way then where is the plane? And why would they do it?

(13,460 posts)I didn't realize it couldn't have just all sunk, even after breaking apart.

(22,457 posts)How is there no debris at all? A seat cushion, plastic panel, something. Really weird.

(10,798 posts)My understanding was that based on the time intervals in the satellite handshakes they established where on a either north or south arc that the plane was on.
They discounted the northern route and decided it went south.
The longer it goes with out finding it down there makes me think they need to look north again....it would have made it all the way to central asia, either one of the eastern Stans or western China. If it flew very low and kept to sparsely populated area and valleys they may have avoided detection.
Plus it made more sense to me, it left them with a place to land the plane. If they just wanted to fly it into the ocean no need to go 7 hours south to do that.

What will change if they find the plane?
With so many pressing problems in the world, shouldn't this money and manpower be devoted to somewhere productive?

(17,055 posts)They need to study the black boxes and the plane itself to see what went wrong. It's part of trying to keep us safe and correct anything that may have caused the plane to go down.

and FWIW it has been a long time since a large commercial aircraft disappeared without a trace...Off the top of my head, I can't think of any since the 1970s...

(2,188 posts)They seem near 100% certain it crashed into the ocean, despite no hard evidence. Why won't the mainstream media talk about other possibilities? Are they afraid of looking like "kooks" or is it some more sinister reason?
