Westboro Baptist Church is going to picket my old high school.

This is amazing. Very small town. Most people haven't heard of WBC. They think a "counter-protest" is what is needed. I've tried to explain that WBC lives for "counter-protests." You'll bring out the media, they'll raise funds, they'll get everything they want. And the locals will lose.

They are protesting a HIGH SCHOOL. The reason is apparently that it is a progressive high school (Cocoa Beach High School) that protects students' rights and is supportive of LGBT issues. So these assclowns are going to protest in a tiny beach community...to what ends? For publicity. Period. I can't get my friends to understand this. I keep urging them to stay away, to not afford WBC any free air time. No, they want to go have counter-riot and run WBC out of town. EXACTLY what WBC wants.

Why are people so blind to the bullshit tricks being played upon them?

. . to go back to wherever the f*ck they came from!!

The WBC is just a family that claims to be their own church, and the only reason they do this sort of thing is for money.
Have you noticed that they never go where it is cold in the winter?
I have.

Or as a native friend puts it, "Shallow Alto".

There was a rash of student suicides at Gunn a few years ago. Maybe God Hates Gunn?

6. Indeed, a rash of student suicides by Caltrain sparked the pathetic protest

Church member Shirley Phelps-Roper said the church was drawn to Gunn because of the suicides of several current and former students on the Caltrain tracks since May. The group blames the suicides on a lack of Christian faith, and plans to picket in part because they believe students’ parents "have taught them God is a liar."

I really like Palo Alto even though I could never affords to live there. I did a lot of very exciting work in the city until the dot-com bust killed it.
