(21,020 posts)the same Christmas songs done over and over by different artists.
Like "Little Drummer Boy". How many people have done that? But the local stations play every single version like they're...different!

(53,661 posts)And I love Xmas as it was traditionally about hope for the winter to end. So does Solstice. It's a basic thing for humanity to like a little more sunshine.
It's another holiday, the more the merrier. One doesn't have to care about it to have a good time, the varieties of celebrations are infinite. Some would not have anything to celebrate hating if such holidays didn't exist.
It goes both ways.
Whiskeytide
(4,459 posts)... Christmas is also about kids and their excitement, family gatherings and seeing people you don't see the rest of the year, good food and good talks, maybe some football. I love it. Like most everything, it's usually what you make of it.

(53,661 posts)He came out of Germany in the midst of WW2 and is well-traveled. He has seen great suffering but came to the USA and has done well. IIRC, he's sung in the famous Vienna Boy's Choir as a child.
He is singing professionally. The same things over and over, so it may be dulling. I don't know if he writes these in jest or earnest, but the threads get many views. I don't knee jerk one way or the other in these things. Some have an animus about one thing or the other that needs an outlet to express it. A sort of 'team' thing.
Everyone has a struggle and a story. Your family and your celebrations sound very good to me. I'll be alone as usual for the holidays and will be here with those who have lost their loved ones here. We can still remember the wondeful times you are talking about, or do what we can for those we don't know as this time of year approaches.
Life is so short, too short to spend all furious about what someone else is doing to enjoy themselves they don't even know. It is a staple of message boards, though. I hope you and your have a good holiday season.

(7,939 posts)The small town of Christmas, MI welcomes you to celebrate the joys of Santa Claus, Mrs. Claus and the Elves and Reindeer. All the businesses in Christmas, MI carry out the Santa Claus theme.
Christmas, Michigan, population about 400, was given its name by a Munising man who started a roadside factory to make holiday gift items in 1938. The factory is long gone, but the the community of Christmas continued to grow, becoming a popular resort area and a joy for snowmobilers. Snowmobile Rental at White Pine Lodge in Christmas and in Munising.
Situated just 4-1/2 miles from Munising on M-28, this town is in all reality the town of the Christmas season. During the winter, a scenic Christmas wonderland.
In the summer, the agate beaches of Lake Superior, the roadside santas, stores and signs all welcome the entire family to Christmas, Michigan, a "must" on your Upper Michigan travels.
On July 8, 1966 Christmas acquired its first Post Office and Christmas, Michigan was chosen as the issuing site for the First Day Cover of the 1966 Christmas Stamp. Commemoration ceremonies were held on November 2, 1966.

That said, I love Christmas. I'm Wiccan, so not so much the Baby Jesus stuff, but the lights and trees and family and friends and feasting and love. The making the darkest time of the year a little warmer and brighter- I love it. Yep, I'm a sap. I enjoy making a fuss about loved one's birthdays too. Any excuse to celebrate the good people and good things in my life- I'm in.

(89,241 posts)i'm an atheist so it doesn't have much to do with religion for me.

(34,648 posts)My brand of Atheism is The One True Path!!!!! We think Xmas is okay, but we don't shop until after Xmas. We watch documentaries on Xmas. It's the only way.
freshwest
(53,661 posts)Besides I always had all the Xmas gifts bought before Halloween. All the family birthdays fell between Labor Day and Christmas.
Used to budget for buying Xmas all year and couldn't handle the stress of that last minute shopping. Not into the real trendy stuff, anyway.
We usually got clothes for Xmas anyway. Yes, my folks were party poopers but we heard Nate King Cole and Johnny Mathis, etc. for about a month in our house. There was always a tree and stockings and lights. And the dinner...
As far as Halloween goes, it was a bigger deal when I lived in a warmer climate when it was dry and cool at that time of year. Good for going out. Where I live now, it's likely to be a fall gale, cold and rainy and no fun to be outside.
Won't be any mystery about Halloween this year. Since everyone's gonna dress up like the Seahawks this year, anyway. Yay, Russell Wilson, Marshawn Lynch and Richard Sherman (my fave):
Need I say more?
bravenak
(34,648 posts)That's a great idea!!!! I stopped doing black friday a few years ago, but my husband is addicted to it. So, now, I just let him get his shop on and I can chill. I just wrap the presents up and wait for A Christmas Story to come on for the year. Imma be a Seahawk for Halloween.
freshwest
(53,661 posts)Lately seems Marshawn *Beastmode* Lynch has more fans among guys. The women still *heart* Richard.
But you get some dreads, a Number 25 jersey, your Legion of Boom cap, safety green and navy blue pants and tennis shoes, gloves and coat, and you will be good to go!

A little more about that rant the MSM blew out of proportion, here's where he gave the falsely alleged upset news woman a hug:
This is a good interview, and both he and the CNN reporter go into the racism in this interview:
The Seahawks will be the theme for Halloween and for Xmas here, too. Have a great time and hope the weather is good for some outdoor fun.

(146 posts)The back to school aisles that spring up in July? Stores always run months ahead of time, not sure why just Christmas displays sets people off. I can't tell you how many times I unsuccessfully sought out replacement gloves or hats or snow boots for a kid that lost theirs in January only to come up empty handed in stories pushing swimsuits and beach towels while there is 6 inches of snow on the ground and almost 3 months of winter left.

(111,169 posts)It's the music that can make me homicidal.
There is a lot of bad Xmas music out there, awful stuff that would never get airplay the rest of the year were it more secular. And oh boy, do they all play it!!
They start playing it earlier every single year.
Drayden
(146 posts)Thankfully the sound level at most stores allows me to tune it out. An example of an exception would be Hollister. With the loud, horrid music and pitch black stores and perfume reeking from every corner, it is a complete assault on the senses.
Warpy
(111,169 posts)I'm glad we don't have one of those around here although there is a glut of clothing stores with black walls and playing heavy metal thrash.
That doesn't bother me. What I can't stand is the cloying crap.
BTW, welcome to DU!
It is a testament of my love for my kid I shop there. She is a size 00 and it is almost impossible to find that size jeans anywhere. She is a thrifty kid and will buy shirts from consignment stores, but the Hollister jeans fit the best. So I suffer for her sake.

(36,286 posts)Don't confuse what you see in stores with what you'd see with your friends and family or at church. Christmas the Holy Day is for celebrating the Birth of the Lord (if that's what you believe.) Christmas the holiday is for celebrating good times with friends and family. It's pretty much open to anyone who wants to join. Christmas the retail season is about going in debt buying overpriced goods you and the people you know could do well without. It's open to anyone who falls for the advertizing.
BTW - I'm working in Germany right now, and the grocery stores had stollen and Christmas candy for sale last week! The gift stores in town have been selling Christmas decorations for a couple weeks now.
