Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the foundation known for painting everything pink and, in one extremely controversial decision, pulling its grants from Planned Parenthood, has found a partner in Baker Hughes, a major drilling services company. The result: Baker Hughes is rolling out one thousand pink drill bits this October. Seriously.
The oilfields giant, which also donated $100,000 to the foundation, boasts that its doing our bit for the cure. Get it? Its a pun. A horribly misguided, pinkwashing attempt at a pun.

I've found more than enough grassroots breast cancer events so that Komen's won't be missed. For good measure, I'm running excerpts from an article Will Pitt wrote. And I will be posting an article about Breast Cancer Action, inventors of the concept of "pinkwashing!"

(113,019 posts)that they have turned into a brand has actually HURT the breast cancer awareness efforts being done by serious advocates.
Breast cancer advocates reject 'pinkwashing' of the disease
Breast Cancer Awareness month is marked by pink products and pink awareness-raising initiatives, but critics of the 'pinkwash" say that the products dont raise awareness as much as they raise profits for the companies providing the products, and glosses over the reality of the disease.

Attending one of Komen's "Fashion shows" years ago was enough for me to see what was going on.
As a breast cancer survivor, the thought of anyone becoming wealthy under the guise of promoting awareness for this or any other horrible disease brings back memories of chemo nausea.

(42,523 posts)Don't get me wrong. As a survivor I fully support efforts in education, research, outreach and support for breast cancer patients and survivors, and the importance of early detection, and the October focus in very important. But I cringe at the October onslaught of pink. In my college town, there are fundraisers called "BreastFest" and, worst of all, "Save the TaTa's". I can't tell you how offensive this is to survivors, who are dealing with their scars and often the loss of their breasts. I complained to an organizer of one of these events, telling her that this is not about breasts, it's about saving lives! I also think that retailers are more interested in selling more merchandise in October than raising money for breast cancer. And don't even ask me what I think about S.G. Komen!

They have been capturing research dollars for far too long.

(1,074 posts)They give a pittance to Breast Cancer considering that all that crap they get you to buy in October is your dollars as profit forwarded to Breast Cancer. They put a cherry on top in a few million dollars, guessing its tax deductible too, and they are tax exempt alreadyFreaking phoneys!

(95,337 posts)What they did to Planned Parenthood a few years back was a joke.
There are too many other great groups out there that support Breast Cancer research and leaves the politics aside. If SGK thinks Pink drill bits is funny especially with an industry that probably is helping to raise the number of women with Breast Cancer - well shame on them!
Hell why not have SGK team up with Phillip Morris to put out pink cigarettes for Breast Cancer Awareness month??!!

(95,337 posts)What did SGK think Planned Parenthood was doing with their money. All money was documented and shown to be used for Breast Cancer examinations. Did they think they were giving free abortions with all mammograms or something. SGK execs really blew it on that one!
I always knew that there was a strong GOP bond with SGK but ignored it because I thought that SGK put politics aside and focused on women. But after that fiasco with Planned Parenthood I was done. This thing with the Fracking was just downright stupid on the part of SGK. I can understand the idea that the folks that make the bits want to donate towards breast cancer research. I'm sure dozens of companies that make/do questionable things want to do the same. But then downplay the damn donation. Tell the Bit-maker thank you for your donation but we really don't want you to play up this donation - it looks bad or if you do we will return the money.

(95,337 posts)Somehow the Big-wigs that run SGK have to justify their big salaries.
I read an article about the salaries made by the CEOs who run them. The American Red Cross brings in 10x the donations that SGK does (something like 340mill vs. 34 mill something like that) yet the CEO of SGK makes more money than the person who runs the American Red Cross.
Sick.

(12,151 posts)Apparently it's not. Fracking "for the cure." Fracking. For. "The cure."
They are apparently completely serious.
What's next for the Kreepy Komen foundation? Pink seal clubs "for the cure?" Pink toxic waste barrels for the cure?
Perhaps a bright pink hand grenade or shark-finning knife?
We definitely need breast cancer research, but the Komen outfit is starting to look like a nasty disease itself.
Let's cure that too.

Oh, the irony. They could have painted the entire world pink to try to fight cancer, as if that would do a damn thing to fight it, but teaming up with a fucking industry known to cause flammable water and, oh, I don't know, FUCKING CANCER, to fight cancer is the stupidest shit I have seen in a long time...and I live in an area of the country KNOWN for extremely stupid shit.

Yeah, I know, I should have looked into them before that, but I enjoyed running in their events. And it made me feel better about losing Mom.
Now, whenever they send me stuff, I return it with a note telling them how disgusted I am with them. They've pretty much stopped bothering me.

(185 posts)I'm all for breast cancer awareness. But in the NFL and here in Florida high school football? Wouldn't prostate cancer awareness be more appropriate for a group of boys/men? In fact, wouldn't just cancer awareness be the most appropriate? For my money and time I support the ACS Relay for Life and the Cancer Action Network. I know the good they do, my wife and I are both cancer survivors.
