Fracking company teams up with Susan G. Komen, introduces pink drill bits “for the cure”

Not The Onion. Sorry about that.

http://www.salon.com/2014/10/08/susan_g_komen_teams_up_with_fracking_company_introduces_pink_drill_bits_for_the_cure/

In a statement to the IB Times, a Komen spokeswoman said that the partnership “grew from Baker Hughes’ involvement in our Houston Race for the Cure” and that “the issue is personal to them and their employees,” adding that “the evidence to this point does not establish a connection between fracking and breast cancer.”

Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the foundation known for painting everything pink and, in one extremely controversial decision, pulling its grants from Planned Parenthood, has found a partner in Baker Hughes, a major drilling services company. The result: Baker Hughes is rolling out one thousand pink drill bits this October. Seriously.

The oilfields giant, which also donated $100,000 to the foundation, boasts that it’s “doing our ‘bit’ for the cure.” Get it? It’s a pun. A horribly misguided, pinkwashing attempt at a pun.

Um, doesn't fracking cause... you know... oh, screw it!

"Fracking bits 'for the cure'?"

I-I- whaaaaaaaaa?

I know they put Republicans on the board and defunded Planned Parenthood, but now they're pink washing frackin' FRACKING?

What's next, pink whaling harpoons "for the cure?" Perhaps some pink cluster bombs and anti-personnel mines "for the cure?"

Whaaaaaa?

Salon doesn't do a lot of satire, and I'm pretty sure the International Business Times doesn't do any:

Helping find a cure for cancer or “pinkwashing” carcinogenic pollution? That is the question being raised upon the news that one of the world’s largest fossil fuel services firms is partnering with the Susan G. Komen Foundation on a breast cancer awareness campaign, despite possible links between fracking and cancer.

According to the website of energy services firm Baker Hughes, “the company will paint and distribute a total of 1,000 pink drill bits worldwide” as a “reminder of the importance of supporting research, treatment, screening and education to help find the cures” for breast cancer. The firm, which is involved in hydraulic fracturing, is also donating $100,000 to the Komen Foundation in what it calls a “yearlong partnership.”

on the bright side if you want a job in comedy you just have to read the newspaper and tell the audience it's the Onion.

It really is so much like a bad joke that it's hard to tell.

I await the pink police MRAPS "for the cure," armed with the latest sonic cannons and teargas launchers "for the cure."

Just a scheme to pay big non-profit salaries at this point, apparently.

A few years ago it was a pink KFC bucket. Look at the causes (bad food, fracking, etc) instead of turning everything pink.

And I hate what they did with the color pink. I'm a girly girl and LOVE pink things, but sometimes I want to buy a pink product WITHOUT a Komen seal on it. It can be next to impossible.

And it's not that I don't support breast cancer research, I just don't like Komen. There was a good documentary last year on Netflix about them (not sure if it's still there) called Pink Ribbons Inc. Worth a watch.

not to support this sell out organization. If you are looking for an honest breast cancer campaign to support, I suggest the Stephanie Spielman fund. Stephanie died after years of fighting this disease and her husband Chris runs the fund. He was a standout football player for Ohio State and gave up playing pro football to support his wife. He is a class act and a great man. He is now raising, I think, four children on his own but is continuing the fight for his late wife. He is also involved with coaching football for kids. He walks the walk and still wears his wedding band.

WHY would a sleep foundation recommend putting your head on a pillow doused in chemicals?
