US Supreme Court blocks Wisconsin voter ID law

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2014/10/09/supreme-court-wisconsin-voter-id/16985963/

WASHINGTON -- The Supreme Court on Thursday night blocked Wisconsin from implementing its new voter identification law on the eve of next month's elections.

The action reverses a trend established by the justices in two other cases from Ohio and North Carolina, in which they allowed voting restrictions imposed by Republican legislatures to take effect.

In all three cases, however, it appeared the court wanted to respect changes made by elected officials without confusing or disenfranchising voters.

The court gave no reason for its action, as is routine for such emergency orders. But Justices Samuel Alito, Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas dissented, arguing that the court cannot block an appeals court ruling unless the lower court "clearly and demonstrably erred in its application of accepted standards."

In Wisconsin, the state requires voters to produce photo ID at the polls based on a 2011 law that was rolled out in time for low-turnout primaries the following year. Because of early problems, a state court blocked further use of the law.

The fight isn't over, but the dirty tricks to try to implement in the 11th hour after several thousand ballots were sent is.

disregarded, Evers, JFK, MLK, RFK, LBJ, et al.

She said people are asking their parents who went thorugh it and they are passing it on.

Then she said about the election,'Just you wait and see...' with confidence. It took a load off my heart.

Hoping that means Dems will GOTV in all of these places to get past all these roadblocks!

here twice in past week, Elizabeth Warren on Saturday and Obama will be here closer to the election. We NEED that. We NEED the Obama voters who tend to poopoo the midterms to show up.

This helps.

States will try to implement voter id laws at the last minute knowing full well that even if it is struck down its usually allowed to stay until the next election. All they have to do is keep repeating the same process and they get the desired result. I do not think judges should allow for any delay.

We have seen the depths in citizen disenfranchisement to which he will happily sink to force the agenda his buyers ordered. Imagine him applying this nationally.
He would be the last president.

... gerrymandering and other shenanigans.

We really, really need Michelle, Elizabeth and other progressive leaders to keep coming here to rally the Democratic base.
