By Elizabeth Campbell Oct 10, 2014 12:18 PM ET
St. Louis police faced off with about 200 protesters one night after an off-duty officer shot an 18-year-old he was chasing.
The crowd marched through the streets on the citys south side last night, blocking traffic, beating a bass drum and chanting, Hands up, dont shoot. They burned two American flags in a residential neighborhood and a protester smashed a police-car window across an intersection from the line of officers. Eight people were arrested, according to the police department.
They feel theres been no justice with the system, how black men are constantly getting shot and killed, said Derrick Robinson, pastor of Kingdom Destiny Fellowship, who led protesters down Grand Boulevard with a megaphone.
The confrontation came two months after a police officer in Ferguson, a St. Louis suburb, shot unarmed teenager Michael Brown, touching off nights of rioting. The U.S. Justice Department is investigating the case and a grand jury is deciding whether to indict Officer Darren Wilson.
Last nights clashes began about 10:15 p.m. local time. After keeping a distance from marchers, officers in riot gear blocked their progress with shields and pepper spray. A helicopter orbited, spotlighting groups of protesters.

(7,908 posts)cops learned nothing from Ferguson; they're trapped in a dead-end script that only allows them to react violently.

Not the lesson we SHOULD have taught them...
But they learned.

(7,908 posts)decisively against the police and law enforcement after the MSM's own reporters came under attack from police. In like manner, the St. Louis police risk losing media support if they mace and\or otherwise attack reporters.
Sure the police can 'get away with it' the same way the Cossacks 'got away with it' . . . at least until November 1917.

(3,208 posts)the things are wrong, not just because the police maced them. Macing people expressing their first amendment rights is wrong, and the media should be pointing that out at all times, not just when one of their reporters is hit.

All joking aside, we live for better or worse in a very authoritarian culture, one that pays lip service to the civic virtues of dissent but that worships at the foot of 'might-makes-right' realpolitik. The mainstream media both reflect and shape that authoritarian culture and only when they themselves come under fire does their fealty to the power structure start to fray around the edges. I was actually heartened to watch the media grow a spine after the St. Louis County police attacked them in Ferguson but I agree that, in an ideal universe, the media wouldn't need such a catalyst to do its job.

(3,208 posts)And times like this reminds me WHY I got away from it. When I get my news mainly from DU like people, I guess I tend to think I am in the mainstream, but it's not. But it is so much like my ideal world! And I don't get out much.
