Today was my one year anniversary at my new job. I am through the probationary period! Never really in doubt. No new money or benefits (the bennies can't be any better anyway) but I am locked in a as a full-fledged Commonwealth employee with all the protections. 4 more years and I am vested for the pension (yes a living breathing professionally managed pension) - if I were to leave before retirement I get everything I have put in back.
I LOVE MY JOB!! Damn this feels good.
BTW- 10/4/13 I "resigned" (actually got fired) at 9:45am from "the cult" of a family run non-profit where I worked and got offered my current job at 2:15pm on the phone. I was out of work for 4 1/2 hours.

(182,627 posts)treated like a professional and expected to perform as such. Having worked in some government and quasi-government positions I know that the dedication is nothing like the picture that most people have of it.

(33,999 posts)Unfortunately, no job protections - but I'm at least back in a defined benefit plan (where I vested before leaving for private employment) bumping up my pension considerably every year I stay here and replace one low-paid year with a higher-paid one.
My old business had no retirement plan & very challenging cult-ish dynamics.
Much lower pay where I am now - but much happier. (I jumped ship voluntarily - albeit pushed by some changes which made my old job more challenging than it was worth.)
Congrats!

(32,723 posts)Been there. It was a group home two days a week owned by a friend. It was okay until his mom started working there.
Put it to you this way, never put someone with obsessive compulsive disorder in a position of authority. It triggers their condition and makes them worse. They become obsessed with enforcing the rules. Saying dinner is at 5:00 means nobody is to be sitting at the table ten minutes to five and EVERYBODY had BETTER be seated at 5 or the entire world will collapse into total anarchy.

(182,627 posts)the weird turn came with the Mom's chemotherapy. Breast cancer. I didn't know until that point that there are nice people (and she was) who go flat out evil and vice versa. At one point she called a meeting and screamed "YOU ARE LUCKY TO WORK HERE!!" totally blew her cool. We had to check the phone system regularly to see who wasn't working there anymore.

(25,311 posts)I always worked non-profit. Enjoyed all but last 5 years when the University unloaded the hospital to a subsidiary run by MBA wannabees. They outsourced my lab when I left. Nonetheless, I am enjoying a very comfortable retirement.

I had been at my job for 11 years, and had very good references.

10/3/13
I went into my boss's office and informed her that I had an offer but I needed either a reference or my last two SIGNED performance evaluations.
"We don't give references"
What happened over the next 4 hours that day and the next were beyond weird. They wrote me up for basically working my lunch hour around getting my car out of the shop. Boss and VP (the pretty daughter of the family) confronted me with the write-up. Sorry I may not look it but I have too much punk rock "F You" to put up with that. Ended up with papers flying and me with a box in my hands in the parking lot.
I had worked for two years, including losing weight for interviews, after I was un-invited to a dinner to get out of there. They never saw it coming. The structure was set up that you couldn't interview without them knowing it. I thought I had another position that was covered by leave for a Lyle Lovett concert a month earlier but it didn't work out. I was walking a tight rope for several months. "10-4 good buddy" has a special place in my heart now.

(34,407 posts)Employees are always 100% vested in their own contributions (plus earnings and less losses). You should be at least partially vested in employer contributions before 4 years. (By federal law) Check it out!
Congratulations! You are very lucky to have a job you love.
