Viola Davis brings attention to the "Hunger Is" campaign with her own personal story.

VIDEO: Viola Davis Emotional Speech About Childhood Poverty — “I Jumped In Garbage Bins With Maggots” For Food

Viola Davis gave an emotional speech about growing up hungry and poor during the Variety Power of Women event on Friday.

The “How to Get Away with Murder” star spoke about her desperate childhood, during which she “jumped in garbage bins with maggots” and took other extreme measures to feed herself.

Davis described her childhood as one of “immense shame,” and called the fact that one in five U.S. children lives in a household without enough food the “stain that is on this country.”

Speaking about her involvement with the Hunger Is campaign, Davis said she didn’t set out to “save the world,” but rather to “save” herself — and to make sure other children had the chance to thrive.
