I often wonder about physicians and nurses who are the first to see sick people with illnesses that are yet to be diagnosed. I know they wear protective gear when they know a threat is imminent.

(51,666 posts)at a cat in a carrier that had been brought in for evaluation of neurologic signs and biting somebody. My brain finally acknowledged the possibility of rabies at the exact moment it spit into my face from a foot away.
The health department and CDC were pretty nervous and wanted me to start treatment the very second the cat's test came back positive. It was a Friday night and I was going out to dinner. I decided to take my chances ad start in the morning, and they had to accept that. I chose to trust my body to still have some immunity from my rabies shots in vet school.
In retrospect I should probably have been more worried. Aerosol/droplet exposure to the eyes/upper respiratory tract is the fastest way to die of rabies other than corneal transplant.
It's scary, but WE don't let it get in the way of doing our job properly. I sure hope human medical personnel wouldn't, either.

(19,564 posts)Having just seen what Mr Duncan went through, I'm sure she's terrified. I'm hoping since they've caught her case early she'll have enough time to apply for experimental medication from the FDA under a compassionate use clause, and she may have better chances of making it.
Her SO and a pet are also being monitored now. Hopefully since she was in the early stages they'll both be safe.
