Maharashtra just reminded me to vote via text message

Just putting that out there.

Maharashtra is a state in the republic of India. It's the state Mumbai is in, which is the city where I live (and incidentally it's the most amazing city in the world in some ways).

India is in a very odd political situation right now, which a lot of DUer's posts can clue you in to. But the state government remains with the left coalition, and the right coalition in this state can't even field a candidate, but are still urging people to deface their ballots.

My point is, I'm not a registered voter in Maharashtra, because I'm not a citizen of India, but the phone company had absolutely no problem with the idea of reminding me to vote (the phone company mostly supports the BJP, who will almost certainly get blown away in this election).

What if every US cell phone provider did the same?

It might be quite a boon for turnout. It wouldn't be hard for elections offices to do, since they often take your number in case something is wrong on your registration. Unfortunately, Republicans don't support increasing the number of votes, so they would find some reason to call it unjust or unconstitutional.
