Family identifies Ebola patient
Marjorie Owens, WFAA 12:18 p.m. CDT October 13, 2014
DALLAS A Dallas nurse diagnosed with the Ebola virus over the weekend is a former Texas Christian University student identified by a family member as 26-year-old Nina Pham.
The family reached out to WFAA Monday morning and shared an image of the nurse who grew up in Fort Worth.
A health care worker at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas, Pham became infected while treating Thomas Eric Duncan, who died from the virus days before the nurse's diagnosis.
Pham graduated from TCU's nursing program in 2010 and is the first person to contract the disease while in the Unites States.

(68,644 posts)It's a reminder to us all that hospitals are by no means free of danger.
Pathogens are ornery and ever-evolving.
Some bacteria resist commonly used hand sanitizers and are persistent.
c-diff is one.

Barrier methods in use in Africa are superior to what hospitals generally make available to nurses and 30% of deaths from ebola in Africa are health care workers, mostly nurses.
Republicans need to be hammered hard on this issue during the election season for cutting essential services like the NIH and CDC. We need to get them out of office. It's clear many lives depend on it.

(35,015 posts)The report on my local news said they have no intention of euthanizing the dog, and are expecting her to recover so they can be together again. She is very attached to her dog. It was a positive bit of news in all this.
