Great book, I have always been intrigued by Carter, he is the 1st President I remember thoroughly. I remember when he lost in 80 my mom was devastated she called Reagan a war monger, but I liked him because the way the press treated him and Carter was looked on as a failure. I was young and dumb back then.
Carter losing the WH I believe was a devastating blow to what possibly could of been a much different Middle East today and United States.
Carter was a smart man maybe not a great politician but an A1 brain, I know he could be prickly but most great men/women are driven with a mission, damn the feelings
Reagan just riding on a myth, credited with winning the cold war, Robert Gates credited Carter as doing as much or more as any individual to bring the downfall of the USSR. I read this I think in a quote from a Chalmers Johnson book
good read from a 2008 article

The worst part of Reaganism was its political success. It left behind a coterie of panting acolytes who learned from Reagan himself that optimism, cheerfulness, an embrace of magical thinking and the avoidance of the painful truth was the formula for victory at the polls. For a time, it worked -- the cost of gas went down --and Carter, that scold in the silly sweater, was banished. As they say in New Orleans, Laissez les bons temps rouler! (Let the good times roll!) Upbeat? You bet. But not a business plan.

Well, they took him down and the future good of the country went with him.

(13,685 posts)Good to hear there are accurate history books detailing what Carter went thru.
The oil scare in which Carter was caught up in was one which it has been said was a manufactured crisis with Saudi Arabia as the benefactor. The price of oil was allowed to double. The Saudis made much extra money from the deal. And the deal was they would then leave Israel in peace.
