Seth Rogen Sets Up Grant Program For Alzheimer's Sufferers

http://www.hollywood.com/news/brief/57697275/seth-rogen-sets-up-grant-programme-to-provide-care-for-alzheimer-s-sufferers?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=hollywood

Comedian Seth Rogen is helping to make full-time care for Alzheimer's disease sufferers a reality by setting up a special grant program via his Hilarity for Charity foundation.

The Knocked Up star has become an outspoken campaigner for increased government funding into Alzheimer's research after his now-mother-in-law was diagnosed with the condition shortly after he began dating screenwriter Lauren Miller. The couple wed in 2011 and subsequently set up the Hilarity for Charity organization, which aims to raise money for dementia research projects, and he even testified at a U.S. senate hearing on Alzheimer's research earlier this year (14).

Now Rogen and Miller have teamed up with officials at Home Instead Senior Care to offer grants for in-home services, which many families across the U.S. and Canada are unable to afford. The funnyman admits he has no idea how he and Miller's family would have coped had he not been able to help cover the costs of his mother-in-law's treatment, and now he wants to provide the much-needed care for others struggling with the illness.

He explains, "The only thing that makes the situation remotely liveable is the fact that I'm in a very comfortable financial situation and we can pay to have someone live with Lauren's mother, essentially, and provide her 24-hour care. "We started to realize that the government does not subsidise this type of care, as many think they should, and a lot of people just can't afford it on their own, so we have set up a program where, if you can't afford it, you can apply for a grant through Hilarity for Charity and we will provide you with free in-home care."

Silly me I don't know much about Seth Rogen, however he is my new best friend.

My sister and I tried to care for my dad. She gave him the home and we shared care with the help of some covered care givers. She worked part time and me, full time. I was spending another 25 hours a week taking care of my dad. I fed him and bathed him and talked to him.

It was a strain on our relationship, my sister and I, as he got worse, we could not handle it anymore. He needed far more than the two of us could give him. He is 92 now and has been in the nursing home for three years. He knew my name for awhile now he does not. Though in a way he knows me, every now and again he tells me he loves me. Last week he put up his arms as best he could and said " love you this much". He did that when I was a child, daddy loves you this much and as a child I gave that back to him.

The break through I read about the other day and now this gives me hope for more awareness and maybe someday a cure. My heart goes out to anyone that knows the reality of this disease.

Thank you for this Op Steve.

sheshe2,

My best to you, your sister and father.

My Mom lives with us...at age 93, she's pretty sharp but it's her vision and body that are about shot.

Glad you are caring for your mom, bless her and you.

There were issues that we could no longer deal with, can't get into them here. Things were out of control.

It needs to be talked about. We need a cure or at the very least something to lessen the impact of this disease.

Thanks Steve.

To be mentally "all there" but lose the ability to move and swallow, etc., just terrifies me. But, six of one, half a dozen of the other. They are both horrific ways to go.
