http://www.ijreview.com/2014/09/177226-alaskas-former-first-family-allegedly-involved-hillbilly-style-drunken-brawl/Actually I am betting some producer is pitching a family brawl reality show right now to the History Channel. It would fit right in with the other fare.

(100,061 posts)Palin was actually right about something for once. There's "Party Down South", there's "Duck Dynasty", there's "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo", there's "19 Kids And Counting", I could go on and on.

(35,699 posts)Apparently comparing Palin reality TV to a hillbilly realtiy show. I have no idea why they would make that comparison as obviously there are no hillbillies in Alaska.

(19,964 posts)The Palins are from Alaska.
The Robertsons are from Louisiana.
"Party Down South" is set in Murrells Inlet, a coastal SC town.
These are not hillbillies, unless you consider the term "hillbilly" to be a broad-brush pejorative. I resent it. Not that I would alert on your post or this offensive thread -- I've found that tossing around such insults is still perfectly acceptable here on DU.

(19,964 posts)But if the definition provided in the urban dictionary is correct, I won't be using it. It's not even an accurate description of people like the Palins, Robertsons, etc., Republican millionaires who've made a cottage industry of pretending to be poor common folk. I'll call them what they are -- ASSHOLES. And you can find them no matter where you live.

peckerwood
A peckerwood is a rural white southerner, usually poor, undereducated or otherwise ignorant and bigoted, the term gained popularity in the deep south during the early twentieth century and was meant to be derogatory. It is a reversal of the name of the red bellied woodpecker which had a patch of red on the back of its head and neck, therefore a peckerwood is a redneck, terms that describe similar groups of people are trailer trash or white trash but neither of those have the same effect or ring to them as peckerwood does.

(60,010 posts)I had pointed out one of the red headed woodpeckers in my yard, and he ran over to his parents and excitedly exclaimed
" I just saw a wooden headed red pecker".
For the record, urban dictionary got it wrong, I think...it talks about a patch of red on the back of its head and neck,
which is the redheaded species.
There are both the red headed and the red bellied woodpeckers down here.

(82,849 posts)I mean, Gov. Palin has indeed turned her entire life into a reality show. Is she still doing that? I haven't heard much since the initial "splash" of publicity.
You have to admit, she really knows how to play the media games, get her name in the headlines, and then just wait for the popular media to get distracted. After a suitable period of time, she pops up again, and the media focus on her as if she's new and fresh instead of riding the same tired schtick for the umpteenth time.
