These Natives are so nice, we’d be crazy not to enslave them!

2. These Natives are so nice, we’d be crazy not to enslave them! This excerpt from Columbus’ diary describes the Arawak people who greeted him and his men:

They … brought us parrots and balls of cotton and spears and many other things, which they exchanged for the glass beads and hawks’ bells. They willingly traded everything they owned… . They were well-built, with good bodies and handsome features…. They do not bear arms, and do not know them, for I showed them a sword, they took it by the edge and cut themselves out of ignorance. They have no iron. Their spears are made of cane… . They would make fine servants…. With fifty men we could subjugate them all and make them do whatever we want.

were talking of liberty and such, while endorsing slavery, denying the vote to women, killing Native Americans for their land, etc. It's a sorry history. I think we should dispense with Columbus Day and speak/teach the truth regarding the founding fathers, etc.

effed up treatment. Not that I have ever celebrated columbus day, but now knowing this I stand soundly against it and will denounce it to any celebrant in the future.

... but it definitely included people who, because of their origins, were considered something less than fully human. I'm just glad the world we live in considers this abhorrent.
