But compared to today's Republican party...

(26,060 posts)He was the only republican I thought could actually beat the President in 2012. It was a great comfort knowing the repub base was too stupid to nominate him.

(2,518 posts)He was just dumb. Not batshit crazy.
And he really was dumb...

(26,060 posts)but not nearly batshit crazy enough for the teabaggers. That said, Astorino (for those not in NY, that's who is running against Gov Cuomo) really is that batshit crazy - I know this as I'm in Westchester and still can't figure out how he got elected.

Douglas Carpenter
(20,226 posts)Governor of Pennsylvania and presidential candidate in 1964. From Wikipedia, on his congressional career: "Though a freshman Republican, he quickly gained a reputation as an outspoken centrist and supported much of President John F. Kennedys social agenda including civil rights and the Peace Corps. The media quickly dubbed him a Kennedy Republican.
He just died on July 28, 2013 - Yet for a very brief moment in history he was the leader of the liberal wing of the Republican Party and a serious contender for the Republican nomination for President of the United States
People forget that Henry Wallace and Robert M. La Follette rose to national prominence as Republican Party politicians.

(9,748 posts)A lot of people believe he only did that because of his own pending criminal trials. But I actually believe him on this one. When the Innocence Project got the majority of death row inmates out of jail in Illinois, it struck a nerve with a lot of people.

(4,748 posts)Tom McCall (Oregon Governor 19671975) runs again for office. Of course he's been dead for 30 years and would never be supported by today's Republican Party.
