Poll: Public confidence in CDC and the government nose-dives

Americans' faith in the agency charged with protecting the homeland from the rapidly escalating Ebola outbreak in West Africa -- which has already crept onto U.S. soil -- has dropped sharply since the crisis emerged.

A CBS News Poll has found that positive assessment of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has declined dramatically, with only 37 percent of respondents saying the CDC is doing an excellent or good job -- down from 60 percent in a May 2013 Gallup poll.

The CDC is rated more positively by Democrats (49 percent) than Republicans (35 percent).

Officials from the Obama administration, including the president himself, have acknowledged that missteps were made in the handling of the first confirmed Ebola case diagnosed inside the U.S; a Liberian man who died in a Dallas hospital on Oct. 8.

---

The CBS News Poll asked Americans to rate the job being done by various government agencies and departments, and measured the public's confidence in a number of U.S. institutions.

Of the nine government agencies tested, just one, the FBI, received a positive rating from more than half of Americans.

Those of you who think Ebola won't have an effect in the mid-terms are nuts.

I hope it does affect the midterms, in the sense that people realize how valuable our govt agencies are.

The media tells the people to panic ... they panic ... and then the media covers the resulting panic.

And the dopes fall for it.

Terrifying.

The media loves this ... there is nothing at all happening ... and so its news they can cover from behind the anchor desk.

Rightwingers see government agencies making mistakes or having problems, and see that as proof that we need to get rid of those agencies.

Leftwingers see government agencies making mistakes or having problems, and see that as proof that we need to provide more resources to improve those agencies so they actually do their work better, and in a more foolproof manner.

Once upon a time, the Unites States Surgeon General was the face of authority and accountability when something like Ebola surfaced.

Now, thanks to the republican party and their scummy allies in the NRA, there is no one holding that position.

President Obama should use this to hammer conservatives in the next three weeks.
