Looks like my wife didn't get the job. She never heard back after the phone interview

and the guy was making his choice within an hour of speaking to my wife.

However it seems like a game of telephone...Regional office calls corporate...Corporate office calls staffing company corporate office who calls regional office... She might hear something Monday but she is going on the idea she didn't get it.

HOWEVER She was shocked to hear from the at&t call center in West Virginia. past their pre-employment test but they had hired everyone they needed. She got a text message and e-mail requesting she re-apply for the customer service specialist again.

The place is about 30 mins away from Washington PA and would start her at $13.00/hr. + benefits.

$13.00/hr is still insultingly low but it's a hell of a lot better than food or retail.

the company probably changed it's mind about hiring. A place I worked did that quite a bit, advertised for a management position then filled it by promotion.

Could I suggest networking via meetups. Think about something you or your wife like to do that you have some knowledge of or maybe want to learn about. Then go and meet people doing what you like to do or want to do. Half to 75% of the jobs out there are ones that never get listed.

Have your elevator interview ready. Go meet new people doing things that you want to do.

find enjoyment (when she can) either curled up with a good book or doing a marathon watching of a tv series or movies.

I am of course a diehard sports fan.

I don't think we would know how those interest could lead to networking.

Their are entrepreneurial meet ups, tech meet ups, hobby meetups, business meetups, whatever. Don't just wait on phone calls from temp agencies.

You don't walk in asking if anybody has a job, but people with similar interests will certainly be a ware of them. You might meet an owner of a company who is hiring, but you would never know it otherwise.

Networking is not some arcane strategy, it is basically just actively meeting people outside of your normal circle. Just be yourself and stay sober at the meetups if alcohol is involved..

Maybe something like this:

It's a more formal business/professional oriented form of social media. No DU types of discussion, off-color or in your face language. You join as yourself. No aliases.

One other thing I would recommend is get yourselves some inexpensive business cards from a place like Vistaprint.
http://www.vistaprint.com/?no_redirect=1&xnav=logo

They don't have to be specific. Name; email; interests/skillset. It's easier than reaching for a pen and a scrap of paper. Entering info in a smartphone is also distracting and can interupt the flow of conversation. Depends on the situation of course. Carry a pen with you anyway of course.

The cards are an option, and good to have if needed.

The economy is up; consumer sentiment is picking up. There is a lot of activity. I hope you guys find a good place to hop on.

Stay positive, and don't worry about being shy! You'll have each other to start until you feel eager to branch out individually.

Have fun!

Things happen, people get side-tracked from the task at hand, etc. If it's going to happen, it'll happen whenever it's going to happen.

Best wishes to you both, I know it can be extremely hard on the nerves.
