I just discovered the song two weeks ago, putting together a playlist for a drive through Canada last week. I listen mostly to classical and stopped listening to popular music when the Talking Heads broke up. I hadn't even heard Constant Cravings before I went through that exercise (I mean, I'm hopeless). But this one has an anthemic quality to it and I really love the crowd response; it's clearly a religious moment for them and they're responding to the lyrics. Any time that happens for kids I'm just happy for them; I know what it meant to me 35 or so years ago.

to the point of being a cartoon. At least the indie rock I linked to (which I can totally understand not liking -- as you say it's a matter of taste) has some hint of genuine art to it. That silly Riverdance-meets-Charlie-Daniels thing smacks of focus groups and market research; "Do that stompy thing -- the early-30s female demographic loves that shit!"

it's a bit too processed for my tastes, though I do like modern Celtic rock. And I do like the "Radioactive" cover linked later.

I'm not crazy about the denigration of "Riverdance." Although not a fan of that show, I do like modern Celtic music (and the traditional stuff too).

I do agree that much modern pop music is junk. But the majority of pop music always is.

The Modern Record Industry is doomed........The Frozen Soundtrack is the ONLY album to go platinum this year........More and more artists are finding out that they can sell their own albums/CD without industry support........The support system of the Record Industry that used to nurture artists is almost completely non-existent.......I could go on, but in the end it means that the behemoth record labels of the past are going away.

and on top of the billboard isn't necessarily good (in fact, that's arguably true for most cases). If a person like me wants some hardcore and non-bubblegum rap, I need to continue looking for underground artists. Mainstream rap (and R&B) is trash. It got bad enough to where I'm now also listening to many other genres (like metal and classical music) that I never would've thought of listening to when I was younger!
I guess the musicians themselves can't really be blamed, though. They're just producing what the fans (and record industries) want these days.

Virtually all of the pop I hear that has become pervasive on commercials and in retail establishments is as formulaic and unoriginal as country has been for the past 20 years.
