Hi all,
As I posted here shortly ago, my grandmother passed away this morning. The details of her death are better described there, as well as my own grieving, feelings, and wants from those who wish to contribute.
What this thread is dedicated to is the great, under appreciated people who work for Hospice. When my grandmother started to go downhill, they began visiting her at the nursing home on a regular basis to make certain that she was okay and comfortable. When it became apparent that she was in the process of dying, they then posted nurses with her on a 24-hour basis. Whatever she needed to be at ease and free of pain, they were able to administer it without hesitation, and they did so with great attentiveness and care.
During that very sad time when we gathered to say goodbye to her last night, after she had been asleep for two days and so forth, the nurses were there to comfort us and to explain everything we needed to know. If we had questions, they answered them in detail and never treated us as though we or my grandmother were a bother to them. I would imagine it must be a hard job, and it takes a good soul to do it, helping each individual pass comfortably in their own time.
If any of you happen to be here, this was the first time I had been there for the passing of a grandparent (the last of my grandparents), and seeing you in action made me admire you greatly. Thank you for what you do.

(60,013 posts)All four of our parents were under hospice care at the end of their lives (my dad in a hospice facility, my mom in a nursing home, and my wife's mom and dad in their homes), and it made an extremely difficult event as tolerable as possible. Words can't suffice to describe examples of remarkable care, in all four cases.
