(CNN) -- When I first heard the story about an Atlanta judge who reprimanded an immigration attorney for bringing her 4-week-old to court for a hearing -- a hearing the attorney, Stacy Ehrisman-Mickle, told CNN she asked the judge to reschedule because she was on her six-week maternity leave -- I was outraged like many other working women.
Two other immigration judges -- one male, another female -- in two unrelated cases granted Ehrisman-Mickle's request to delay hearings while she was on maternity leave, she said in an interview.
What appears to be a lack of compassion by the judge in question is troubling but sadly not surprising, many women say.

"The judiciary continues to be majority 'pale, male and stale,' like most positions of power and authority in this country," she said. "I heard counsel (usually male) plead trial conflicts, planned vacation and even time off for custodial visits with their kids ('Your honor, I only get them for two weeks every summer') and the court always accommodated those other commitments."

Huh. Says a lot about the people of Atlanta to let this go on by one of their judges. Especially beating up on a mom with no other alternatives.
Wonder if women might get outraged, start showing up at that courthouse in increasing numbers seeing if they can find a human being to replace him. Seems like a wonderful place for a new million mom march - right past his office.
Would be funny if all the attorneys had the guts or interest to support a fellow professional and stop everything until there is a very public apology.
Judge J. Dan Pelletier Sr. <-- You are an ass.

(21,046 posts)who told a very pregnant female lawyer to "not have that baby in his court". She replied she would do her best. She later became a judge herself. He had a very explosive temper and hated working women. I often wanted to ask him if he would find a lawyer to marry me and support me, since he didn't like working women and I was his court reporter. I worked for him almost a year before I walked out after he dropped hints that I was incompetent. I had a 2 year court reporting degree where I had graduated magna cum laude, basically straight A's, and a BA in biology from the best pre-med school in the state, and was going to law school at night to earn my J.D. at the time.
I finally walked out on him after he dropped hints. He could not hold court for several months because not one court reporter in town would work for him. He hung around the docket clerk's office and did not hold court because there was no one to make a record. The docket clerk assigns cases that are ready for trial to a court that is available. The fact that I was so incompetent I could not replaced was impressive in a town the size of Houston.
Every lawyer in town hated his guts. I also worked in Federal court and the young Federal judges had huge egos and they were pitiful. The older ones were laid back but the young ones were busy making sure we all bowed and scraped. I quit working there after six weeks and went back to state court. They had a micromanager for us in Federal Court.
