On the heels of scathing allegations against the Alaska Army National Guard, the Anchorage School District has indefinitely halted all military recruiting at its schools, according to Heidi Embley, district spokeswoman.
Ed Graff, district superintendent, alerted all branches of the military Monday that they could no longer recruit on school property until they met individually with Graff to "discuss student safety and other issues," Embley said.
Graff was in a board meeting Monday evening and could not be immediately reached for comment.
Embley said Graff's action came in the wake of media reports on leaked investigative files that describe sexual misconduct in the Alaska Army National Guard, some accounts involving high schoolers.

According to the files, a former student at Dimond High School in Anchorage said that an officer repeatedly asked her out on dates. The woman said that the officer told her she was pretty and that her eyes stunned him. When he tried to take her to his home, she jumped out of the car and used a strangers phone to call her father for help.
Two other former Dimond High students said the same officer invited them to parties where there would be alcohol. They were underage. A sergeant said the officer bragged about having sex with several people, including a high school student, according to the files prepared between 2010 and 2014.
In a statement Monday, Candis Olmstead, public affairs director for the Alaska Army National Guard, wrote that the guard was
Disappointed that the Anchorage School District feels that they have to keep our recruiters off of their campuses.
One would think they would say, "Sorry" "We cannot believe our recruiters did that" "We are doing everything we can to hold these people accountable"
Instead we get "What...What's your problem"

but then they all come crashing down with this side issue.
Sullivan is implicated, the entire legislature that ignored it for so many years...
MANY are asking----where is the accountability for these rapists?
No one has gone to jail yet...something clearly is wrong with the justice system as well....

(46,436 posts)I'm worried that Sullivan might manage to buy the Senate seat. Have you seen the ad with Condi Rice? As if we haven't had enough of Bush policies. Sheesh...
I'm hopeful that Begich's ground game in the villages will be enough to put him over the top.
And, yes, there are so many members of the Corrupt Bastards Club still in the state legislature. They must go. I'm on the west side, so am pulling for Clare Ross and Matt Claman.

(15,804 posts)I can't say that parties with alcohol would be particularly shocking. Kids at that school had access to plenty of anything. Probably still do unless the socioeconomics have changed.
But adults doing this stuff? And the Guard at that? Holy hell. The Guard's public affairs person could be way more sensitive or savvy. I applaud Graff for taking the stance he has taken.
(And I don't remember the Guard being in campus back in the day. But Dimond was a huge school and probably still is so I probably just missed that they existed.)

(15,804 posts)with C-square. I swear that high school design was the most idiotic ever - designed for California but plunked down in Anchorage!
I graduated a few years before your daughter so she was probably in HS when I was getting ready to graduate.
I happened to spend some time at the school's website a few months back and was surprised to see Junior ROTC as an option at the school. Maybe that was post-9/11 too?

This is who was responsible for sexual assaults and the coverups?
