The picture is of British "militant" suffragettes. I found this link:

(18,791 posts)People around the world have died for the Right to Vote.
And morons here are either too lazy, too stupid, too non-caring...it goes on and on.

(82,849 posts)There are very well-connected and moneyed forces hard at work to either block access to ballots or persuade certain segments of the electorate that their vote is meaningless. Voters have been carefully coached not to care about such things, and have received a great deal of positive reinforcement for their lazy or stupid proclivities.
My point being that the conditions you complain of didn't "just happen."

We forget how hard it was for women to get the vote and what they went through to get it...because it seems so normal these days that everyone has the opportunity.....forgetting how hard and how long it took women and blacks to get that right to cast a ballot.

How little some of us appreciate the sacrifices made by those who have come before us.

(5,562 posts)One time I didn't like the major party choices and voted "rhino" which was a kind of a jokey protest party we had in Canada for awhile. I've often voted for lesser known parties that I knew wouldn't win. Once I wrote in a name which isn't easy to do in Canada because the ballots are black, and which anyhow effectively spoils the ballot.
Lately because we have a leftist party and a centerist party splitting the vote against the harperites, I've been voting strategically for whichever one has the best chance of beating the conservative in our riding. In other words, anybody but Harper. I'm not alone in this but with the split vote he keeps sliding up the middle.
Every time a destructive conservative wins I feel sick, and swear that there's no use to voting. But when it comes down to it I always do.

(14,165 posts)I have been pounding this theme even since last election. As someone who has voted NDP all my life, I switched last time and voted Liberal. Joyce Murray, she won.
While I respect the philosophy of those that refuse to vote for a party that is not liberal enough for them and could not stomach voting for a neo-liberal third way type party like the Liberals. I also understand that the less votes a progressive party gets, the less relevant their issues will be for the other parties to adopt. That has always been my reasoning in the past.
But the scales have tipped too far in present day Canada. We are in an emergency situation. We must Stop Harper and his ongoing transforming of Canada from an open, progressive inclusive society respected worldwide to an isolated playground of the wealthy.
I just pray that enough Canadians grasp the seriousness of splitting the vote once again, and put aside their party loyalties for at least this one upcoming election. Because Harper has engineered a surplus (by taking in more taxes, fees, and cutting social spending and transfer payments) in order to have a big gift basket and he will be doling it all out to bribe all the small c conservatives and fence-sitters across the country. And, yes, many will fall for that.

(5,562 posts)Last election I had the luxury of voting NDP but the time before because it was going to be too close, myself and at least 20 people I know were forced to vote liberal. And its a good thing because the lib only beat the con by 5 votes. It was to say the least a really good example of how important it is to vote, and to consider your vote carefully.
This time I'll have to see how it plays out, the NDP guy isn't all that effective in many people's opinion and Trudeau is pretty popular. So I'll have to watch closely to pick right because for the sake of Canada, it HAS to be "anybody but Harper".
That in a nutshell is the problem with our first past the post system, that somebody can win and become a dictator with just over 30%. Other countries have run offs and keep voting until a candidate gets over 50% of the vote. I don't believe Harper and very few conservatives would ever win 50% and we would sure have a different more happy, healthy country.

(21,046 posts)It was a series originally shown on Masterpiece Theater from the Beeb about the women's suffrage movement in England and showed imprisonment and force feeding. It was about the Pankhursts, Emmeline and Christabel, Sylvia and Richard.
Trivia: Patricia Quinn, who was Christabel, was Magenta in Rocky Horror and she was also in I, Claudius.

(4,940 posts)because I love the party atmosphere here at my polling place when an almost-solid Democratic district reelects and elects-new. Probably go "across the street" to have a brew or three afterward.
Democrats have it tough in Alaska, but we're Alaska-tough.
