Our dog is not disappointed, however, she is not pleased by the sound of the doorbell.

(11,417 posts)you get to eat the candy. Wife and I are dinks. The fist year we moved to our town we gave out 10 bags of candy. Kids were driven to our neighborhood by their folks.
That was about 20 years ago.
Now I think the churches have anti pagan Halloween things so there are less kids at the door. I like the ones that come to the door because I think their parents are raising them to be good little agnostics or atheists.
Also there is more candy left over for me.

(3,212 posts)You're right. Some fundie churches around here don't do Halloween. They will celebrate "fall harvest" or "all saints."
On the other hand, a lot of churches will have Halloween parties on the weekend before or after Halloween (for the kids - no "sexy" costumes for the adults LOL), and then most of the kids in the congregation go trick or treating on Halloween, as well! We're going to be picking up our pumpkin at our neighborhood Methodist Church pumpkin patch.

(32,000 posts)in which many houses decorate and scads of folks walk through. My goal is to keep the dogs quiet upstairs (which means I sit right at the front door and try not to get eaten alive by mosquitoes) and hand out candy 6-9. I get a good mix of candy/snacks by shopping at Costco. We look forward to seeing all the little goblins but never turn down the big kids either. I try to keep some full-size candy bars to the side because that's what they really like.
Of course it is kind of funny to watch the guy with the chain saw down the street chase the big kids - I think it makes his year. He really goes all out on decorating but is careful not to scare the little kids.

(693 posts)Halloween usually runs me about $200 in candy from costco, and I still run out every year. I love seeing all the kids dressed up.
I will say I've noticed that the people coming in cars often trick-or-treat later than the walkers, sometimes as late as 10:30, and some ring the bell even when the lights are off. I asked one of the later trick-or-treater groups one time about that and they said since they're in cars they can stay out later.

(2,367 posts)My partner and I bought our house in 2011 in a fairly rural area but there are still tons of kids around and it's not on a highway. Not had a single trick or treater yet.
I know you're just being sarcastic here but if the idea of trick or treaters really bothers you, go out to a nice dinner and a movie.

(22,271 posts)with an elementary school one block away. I moved into this house in September of 1999 and my first year here I went through 13 bags of candy. Yes, we have van loads of kids being dropped off but who the hell cares? I LOVE LOVE LOVE seeing all the costumes, the happy sugared-up faces saying, "Trick or treat!" I even like the older kids. We went through some hard times a couple years back and I couldn't afford to buy candy so we had to shut off the porch light and just stay in the back of the house. That broke my heart. Things are somewhat better now and I so look forward to Halloween and once again being able to hand out candies.
