JustAnotherGen
(31,810 posts)There's always ignore. See my response below. I'm kind of gob smacked that so few people have any heart space heroes they respect. It says a lot about my father that all I can say was - he was a stellar man. He was. The number of forty something white men that came to his visiting hours to bring their respect and share how influenced them? They would all have Coach R at the top of their list. My brother would probably be second.

(34,648 posts)There are just too many to count or list. I am going to stop. With this kinda stuff.
JustAnotherGen
(31,810 posts)Upset because we aren't all thrilled about Corny being on Bill Maher tonight. I think my list speaks volumes.
Uncle Frank didn't have Corny's education or the education of his Father In Law or brother in laws. He didnt speak "pretty" like Corny. Your grammar cops would have a fit with his fixin's and ain'ts -
But he didn't just talk. He did. He gave. He helped. So many black folks received the gift of education he didn't get. Some of them probably were taught by Corny. But I digress.
My list stands - because it provides an excellent contrast point.

(5,790 posts)1) Bill Cosby: He's made me laugh, and he's an advocate for better childhood education. He's not a perfect human being, but he's done a lot of good.
2) Barack Obama: He rose from a dysfunctional family to become an Ivy-League educated attorney, a US Senator, and President of the United States.
3) Earvin "Magic" Johnson: Hall-of-fame basketball player who -- whether he meant to or not -- did a great deal to destigmatize HIV/AIDS. He's also a hghly proficient businessman who has risen to the ownership of the Dodgers.
4) Jay-Z: Musician who earned over a billion dollars and married Beyonce Knowles in the process.
5) Les Brown: Motivational speaker, one-time talk host, one-time Democratic politician, and one-time husband of Gladys Knight. I heard him speak in Florida about 20 years ago. He's a very sharp, self-made man who at one time in his life was labled by the Dade County schools as "educably mentally retarded."
I've stuck with the living, so I've left Malcom X, MLK, Richard Pryor, George Washington Carver, Benjamin Banneker, and countless others out of this.

(31,810 posts)My father. - he was a stellar man
My Grand Daddy - lived all his life in Jim Crow and beat the son of a gun at his own game
My Uncle Doug - one cool cat. He was an air force aviator in his first career - second career? Xerox named a town hall meeting room after him. He implemented TQM at Xerox.
My uncle Frank - son of share croppers, dropped out of school when he was 12 because his father was lynched. Joined the army to fight in WW II. Went to Pittsburgh to work in a steel mill after eloping with the rich mans daughter (my aunt Clara). They scrimped and saved and plotted - bought apartment buildings and office buildings. When he died Aunt Clara was worth more than 6 million dollars. Get this - the house they bought in 1950 and paid cash for in Aliquippa they lived in until Aunt Clara moved to her retirement community a few years ago. It was 1300 square feet. At his funeral my dad pointed out that Frank was proud that in his 90 years he only owned five cars. He exemplifies - how big and showy do you need to be? You don't need to be. He gave a lot of people a free place to live - sometimes for a year at a time because they fell in hard times. Funded food banks, gave over a million dollars to the UNCF. And he was sweet and always had sugar cane at hand.
Joe Miller - former citi bank South American VP. That's my god father. Child of a prostitute in Harlem. Worked his way through City college. Joined the Army - became a Green Beret with my dad. Never married or had kids - another man that lives way below his means and blows through his money giving it away to people who need help.
You won't see any of these men in the news. There are no statues built in their honor. You might see my dad and Joe in pics of those first Green Berets, Vietnam documentarys -
But to me? They the black men I respect the most. The number one thing they each gave me? Never back down. When you are chastised - push back fiercely.
When you grow up within the black culture - you don't need to reach for the mega stars. You have precious jewels right in you blood line.

A high school friend who is now a prominent lawyer in the community I went to high school in
Another friend of mine who is now a high school choir director
As a bonus a friend from Jr. ROTC who died tragically as a young man from heart disease. That one hurts.
