As many of you know, AT&T sold their entire land line system (phone/DSL/UVERSE) to Frontier Communications. Ever since the transition last night to Frontier, DU has not been loading due to a DNS problem. If you have surfed here on a proxy or on a mobile device, here's how to fix the problem in the short term on your own PC.
Below I have listed the steps for Windows 7.
For Win 8, go here: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/windows-8/fl/change-dns-servers-windows-8.htm
For Vista, Go here: http://www.plus.net/support/software/dns/changing_dns_vista.shtml
For XP, Go here: http://www.mediacollege.com/computer/network/dns.html
From : http://pcsupport.about.com/od/windows7/fl/change-dns-servers-windows-7.htm
Open the Windows 7 Control Panel, which on most computers you can access directly from the Start Menu.
Once Control Panel is open, click Network and Internet.
Note: If you have either the Large icons or Small icons view of Control Panel selected, you won't see Network and Internet. Find and click Network and Sharing Center applet instead and then skip to Step 4.
Click the large Network and Sharing Center heading.
Look in the left margin and click the Change adapter settings link.
From the Network Connections window that's now on screen, find and double-click on the network connection that you use to connect to the Internet. This is the one you'll be changing the DNS servers for.
Tip: In Windows 7, wireless connections are usually labeled as Wireless Network Connection, while wired ones are usually labeled as Local Area Connection.
Click on the Properties button from the connection's Status window.
Click on Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) from the list of items on the connection's Properties window.
With that item selected, click on the Properties button.
Near the bottom of the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) Properties window, choose the Use the following DNS server addresses: radio button.
Enter a Preferred DNS server as well as an Alternate DNS server in the areas labeled as such. I used Google with 8.8.8.8 as primary and 8.8.4.4 as secondary.
Save and DU will load normally!

(60,010 posts)Hope your speeds are better than mine.
I have Frontier down here in So. Ala, for the last 10 years.
They are deregulated in our state, and will push for same elsewhere if they can get it.
Prices rose immediately after deregulation.
They charge monthly for use of their modem, even if you are not using THEIR modem.
Took 3 months of phone calls for me to get monthly charge removed.
Now they have started charging 3.00 a month for the "convenience" of having long distance capability,
having lowered long distance minutes from 18 cents to 10 cents a minute ( and adding that 3.00 charge each month)
I had to remove all long distance capability on our phone to get rid of that charge ( we use the cell for long distance)
Check your bill EVERY month for weird charges, they invent stuff.
Good news...we have NO download limits.( knock wood)
Our other alternatives here are Mediacom cable ( well known for over priced service and for being unresponsive to out-ages.)
Or satellite..well known for being blind in torrential downpours and snow.

(16,199 posts)Weak regulation isn't a problem in Connecticut, one of the states advantages since so many complain about the state. We are also supposed to retain the same speeds, but things have been chaotic today, though they did announce that the switch is having some problems.

(16,199 posts)AT&T wasn't all that great either. Of course, my only other option is Metrocrap, oops, Metrocast for cable.

(24,324 posts)dropped connections....I live in a town of about 30,000.. across the street from a community college, 5 blocks from restaurants and shops, 25 miles from a city of 250,000 and it is populated all the way... They tell me I am 'too far from the local Frontier whatever it is called....
My only other choice is..... drum roll.... TWC! The thought of having to call their customer service is too horrifying so far...

(16,199 posts)I get 15.5 Mb/s download right now, which is about 1.9 Megabytes/second. That's not bad for me considering I'm surrounded by trees and dairy farms for miles in any direction.

(24,324 posts)1.8 Mb/s.. Really 1.8..At best. I can get 5 Mb/s at work but rarely..That is closer to the city but..
I have friends in Norway who get like 40 ! Even higher in The Netherlands.
And NYS has one of the fastest speeds in the USA at an ave of 30, so I read.
Frontier is DSL, of course but still... 5 Mb/s would satisfy me at this point.

(16,199 posts)I have the Fiber to the Node setup, where fiber optic lines are run to a node, and then the final 2000 feet or so is served over copper wire. It's good for up to 20 Mb/s in theory. Normal DSL is far slower but isn't really an option for me anyhow as I'm too far from a switch station.

(20,670 posts)I still have the cables for cable, but I want to keep the UVERSE because it's web-based and therefore searchable.
We'll see. It's already expensive, so I fail to see how/why they could justify charging more.
Does anyone know why ATT got out of the business?

(16,199 posts)And Conn. is a strict regulation state for businesses. They kept a tight hand grip on AT&T's "testicles" to keep them in line. No doubt AT&T couldn't stand it. Frontier is based in Stamford, so they wanted to service their home state.
My neighbor is a technician/electrician, part of the Communications Workers of America Local 1298 Union, which strongly endorsed the switch. he is very happy and said that frontier fully backed their benefits and pay. All 2600 employees moved over with no layoffs. It appears Frontier has never had technicians in the company and had always hired vendors for their other service areas, so this is a big deal for them.
