68. Medium format? Cool.
Sun Oct 26, 2014, 11:23 AM
Oct 2014

Ive been wondering...what's the "anti-crop" factor, or the multiplier factor for medium format? That is, a "normal" view lens for 35mm on a full frame camera is about a 50mm focal length lens. For APS-C cameras with a 1.5x or 1.6x crop factor, you need to get a lens around 35mm in focal length to match the field of view you'd see on a full frame at 50mm. So what's the focal length of a "normal" lens in medium format? Also, have you considered a digital back? Thanks.

Try this for lens equivalence:

There are several medium format frame sizes. The most popular are:
6x4.5cm: 80mm lens
6x6cm: 80mm lens
6x7cm: 90mm lens

I haven't considered a digital back for four reasons:
1) Digital traps you. The size and quality of a digital file is locked in the instant it's created; if I want a better-quality image off a piece of film than what I scanned, I can use a better scanner or even send it to a lab that prints with enlargers.

2) I've never seen a digital-camera file that didn't look out of focus, and I see a hell of a lot more digital camera files than you do. I also don't like that digital cameras blow highlights out.

3) Film is safe. I don't have to worry about someone rewriting the RAW format converter for my camera and ending support for my negatives. I don't worry about computer viruses. I don't worry about the dyes on my CD-ROM discs fading away and destroying a couple thousand photos. In 2012 I scanned my grandfather's slides of the trip he took Idaho Boy Scouts on in 1950. (They went to the Scout Jamboree at Valley Forge and also took in a baseball game at the Polo Grounds.) I got something off all of them, a lot of them look pretty damn good and these slides had lived in my parents' garage for the last 10 years. That won't happen with digital.

4) The digital back for an M645 won't fit on the camera I have - they only fit on the M645 autofocus body, mine is manual focus - and they're $25,000 anyway.

136. I work at a company that prints multiple newspapers per day
Mon Oct 27, 2014, 08:56 PM
Oct 2014

We publish four dailies, plus a bunch of weeklies. Today I do six total papers, tomorrow I'll do eight, on Sundays I do two and Saturday I print one, but we change the flag three times. I process somewhere between 100 and 200 digital camera files a day. All of them are slightly out of focus (most people wouldn't see it, but I'm very critical about that) and all of them have no information in the whites. On a computer screen that looks okay. On the printed page it USED to be unacceptable, but nowadays that's what we get. (My scanner is calibrated so that a bright white gives 5 percent cyan and 3 percent of yellow and of magenta, if I scan directly to CMYK, or 250/250/250 RGB. And you're thinking, "why do that?" Look here:

The very brightest reflection in each of these is a "specular highlight." That's okay to go to 255/255/255. Problem is, these have specular highlights that are too big - because digital can't resolve highlights as well as film can. Most people wouldn't ever notice, but I do.

>>The 2014 50th Anniversary Kennedy Half Dollar Gold Proof Coin is the first gold half dollar offered by the U.S. Mint. Each coin contains 3/4 troy ounce of pure, 24–karat gold and is struck with a proof finish at the U.S. Mint at West Point, New York.

The raised Kennedy profile is frosted and appears to float on the mirror–like background.

The coins are encapsulated and packaged in a single custom–designed, brown mahogany hardwood presentation case with removable coin well and are accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.

Obverse: A portrait of John Fitzgerald Kennedy, the youngest–ever–elected president. U.S. Mint Chief Engraver Gilroy Roberts based this profile on a portrait prepared for Kennedy’s presidential medal.

Reverse: Based on the Presidential Seal and was created by U.S. Mint Sculptor–Engraver Frank Gasparro. It consists of a heraldic eagle with a shield on its breast holding a symbolic olive branch and bundle of 13 arrows. It features the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, HALF DOLLAR” and “ 3/4 OZ. .9999 FINE GOLD.” A ring of 50 stars surrounds the design, which gives this coin the distinction of having more stars than any other U.S. coin ever produced for circulation.

Good investment I'm thinking ...

i have enough stuff. i have recently gone from having enough money to live on to wondering how i will survive retirement.
but if i had this sort of funny money, i would buy art. have a lot of artist friends. it would be good economic stimulus.
that is something i really miss being able to do.

It would be a wonderful way of "giving back."

I imagine that being a donor of art that gives everyone a chance at the joy of seeing art would be a wonderful thing! Just think of all the lives that would be touched by seeing a great masterpiece!

one of the reasons i was not outraged about the detroit museum "deaccessioning" from their collection to pay public employees was that i knew they had plenty of masterworks hiding in the storerooms. tho many would end up in private collections, some would end up in smaller museums that might actually display them.
what goes on display in major museums, unfortunately, has more to do with who is collected by members of the governing board (hence making their work most valuable) than their intrinsic value.
sad but true.

you should buy something, enjoy it during your lifetime, and leave something valuable to your heirs.
or donate it to some other institution, like a hospital, that would actually share it.

maybe we shouldnt talk too much. i would hate to disillusion you.

I was thinking at the time of Ron Lauder's purchase of "Adele Bloch Bauer" from Adele's niece after she won back the painting from Vienna's Belvedere Museum after a long struggle. Lauder bought it for an astonishing $135 million and preserved it in his Neue Galerie in NYC. Yes, I know this was a vanity thing for him. I get that. But if he had kept it for his own, think of how many people would not be able to see it in this country. I feel that Lauder also made a contribution the people who would never had seen it (such as me) if it hadn't had been for that purchase.

but that there is nowhere it needs to go, pure bonus. Assume it was a rather larger sum and when the world was all in order you had $1,200 that could go in the trash for all the impact on your personal life it would cause negatively if not budgeted wisely then what would you do?

Something you'd like to have a first edition of a book, a bike, golf clubs, a piece of art, a trip somewhere, a donation you'd like to make, anything that would just make you happy.

I'd likely go with a projector I've had my eye on and a screen. I'm certain that I'd enjoy it a lot for a good while.

so i have actually been giving this some thought.
and i have time to give it such thought because the process is rather longer than i had hoped....

would have loved to have seen kate bush in concert, but that is over and tickets were impossible...
and i do not have a passport....

ya know i have not been to a good restaurant in years. A good restaurant-not a chain--and i want to order a steak--not the cheapest thing on the menu (burger or chicken) like i always have done to save money..... a good steak at a good restaurant. I have been broke so god damn long i am just sick of the dollar menu at mickey d's.... I mean thank god for the dollar menu....i can get lunch for 3 bucks.
I will probably just spend it on bills cause you know--steaks really is frivolous...

I have 3 saddles and none of them fit the big headed short round mustang with the stride of a 3 legged gerbil but I think if I had the right saddle she could be just as good as Antoinette Romney's horse.
