in front of him, each labeled with a different group, and a bigger sign that said something like 'Who is more generous?' I think it was various religions and atheists, but you could do the same thing with political parties, or any other set of crosstabs on people passing. In fact, I seem to recall seeing a set of tip jars in a business somewhere, with one labeled 'tips from men' and the other 'tips from women'. It incentivizes donations because people feel like they're 'standing up for' whatever group they belong to.

Bowls labeled Republican, Democrat, and independent.
Bowls labeled conservative, liberal, and middle of the road.
Would you dare use white and other?
Men and women.
Mature, Boomer, GenX, and Millennium.

The possibilities are endless.

I stopped at a market to pick up some snacks and was stopped by a homeless man who asked me for $1.79 so he could call his sister in Ohio.
I gave him a dollar.
After I left and got in the car, I saw him walking out of the market with a quart of beer.
-----------
There was another homeless man in Pasadena, CA who I always gave money to. He was a long bearded older gentleman with a cart full of blankets, etc. One night, I gave him a couple dollars as I left the video store, he mumbled something and handed me a piece of paper.

I looked at it when I got home, and it was his own currency drawn on cardboard.
I tried to find the photo I have of his currency, but I believe it's on another computer.

He didn't pledge to punch anybody.

He was at a McDonald's near Skid Row when three of us DUers walked in after an Occupy L.A. march.

The guy was trying to buy a cup of coffee, but when he counted his coins he came up short. So we said, just put his coffee on our bill.

Guy got his coffee--and then put all of his coins into the Ronald McDonald House donation box. Paying it forward...
