In Some Ways, the Rich Aren’t So Different From You and Me

Social causes top the list. The highest proportion of wealthy people were concerned with United States military involvement abroad, immigration reform and education reform.

Forty-three percent with wealth over $5 million favored or were neutral on higher taxes for top earners. When that group was expanded to people with more than $1 million, those in favor or neutral rose to 59 percent.

“I would have expected 90 percent of the people to be against higher taxes,” Mr. Melcher said. “They’re not saying raise taxes on me. They’re saying if the money can be used wisely, if it’s going to efficiently address structural problems, I’m willing to do my share even if my share means more.”

Mr. Richter is among them. But he despairs at the political leadership who would spend any tax increase.

But nice to see that many are not so much against tax increases.

I was collecting unemployment in 2009 and just got a state tax bill for $8400.00 for 2009 taxes. WTF????? I have no money to get this resolved. I'm wondering why we have public defenders for the scum of the earth, but I can't get free representation over my taxes. I'm not working, I haven't for 3 years. I've been taking care of my 87 year old mother without ANY state help. I made $9600.00 in unemployment in 2009, now the fuckers want it back 5 years later with fees and fines up the wazoo!

I didn't buy my meds last month because my little girl needed new clothes for preschool.

The rich are just like you and me? I don't care what say they care about. They care about #1 and they never have to worry about hard choices. But don't dare take a little of their money, even though they can afford to pay. I'll trade my problems with them and see how different they truly feel.
