The Blundering Rise And Epic Fall Of The Christie-Cuomo Ebola Quarantine

By Dylan Scott PublishedOctober 27, 2014, 2:18 PM EDT

"If anything is clear from the reporting of the nurse who was quarantined in a New Jersey hospital over Ebola fears, it's that the actual quarantine itself was handled miserably. Nurse Kaci Hickox, who returned to the U.S. via Newark airport Friday after treating Ebola patients for Doctors Without Borders in Sierra Leone, described her treatment as "a frenzy of disorganization." She was so flustered that a forehead reading showed her with a fever -- which was then used as reason to quarantine her. Later, they took her temperature again and no fever registered. She was kept in quarantine anyway.

Further reported details of Hickox's predicament made clear that, although New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo were anxious to show resolve and order the quarantine, their local health officials weren't ready to carry out the order in any way that resembled humane treatment.

According to CNN, Hickox was placed in a tent inside the isolation ward at University Hospital in Newark almost simultaneously to the quarantine policy being put in effect. She was not allowed to take her luggage with her into quarantine and was forced to wear paper scrubs. She had no shower or flushable toilet -- she also lacked any form of entertainment, no television and no reading materials. She had to speak with her lawyers through a narrow window in the tent.

She said she mostly spent her time staring at walls -- until she started to take her story national in a first-person narrative for the Dallas Morning News and in her Sunday interview with CNN.

This woman is a hero. She stood up to the twins of nitwittery, Cuomo and Christie, and exposed them for the bullies and idiots they are. Way to go Kaci! Hope she keeps talking about this. The CC twins idiocy will only harm the efforts to combat this outbreak.

Rachel Maddow interviewed another Ebola political prisoner, Mr. Ryan Boyko, Yale student under Ebola quarantine in Connecticut on orders from Gov. Malloy. He had been in Liberia working on their patient tracking system at their ministry of health and had no contact with Ebola patients. I am shocked at how ignorant politicians are about basic public health. President Obama has behaved in the appropriate and effective manner on the Ebola outbreak. Let us not forget the Republicans slashed the funding for the CDC. Dr. Fauci has already stated we would already have a vaccine for Ebola if there had not been budget cuts.

was sick.. Of course Christie is lying.. that's what he does.

"At first, Christie in particular was defiant. He said Sunday morning that he had "no second thoughts" about instituting the quarantine. But that confidence lasted just 24 hours more.

By Sunday evening, Cuomo was revising his quarantine policy, per the New York Times, ordering that patients could spend their time at home. By Monday morning, with everybody from the White House to almost any medical authority who had spoken publicly on the issue urging a more restrained response, Christie said that Hickox could spend the remainder of her 21 days at home.

Christie's office did what it could to save face after that announcement, but the speed of the reversal crystallized what had really been clear from the beginning: This whole thing had been botched.

Big bad Christie had to back down.

Nabachers. However, if Kaci Hickox were to be able to successfully sue the state.. and bring him some More bad publicity.. there would be some justice for what he did to her.

Snip from NYT OP..

"Fortunately, for the public, there are clearer heads at the federal level than there are in the statehouses of New York and New Jersey. On Monday, strict new federal monitoring rules, announced by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last week, went into effect for travelers entering the United States from Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. The rules are designed to avoid the confusion of state-by-state policies, give health workers and other travelers a clearer idea of what to expect and reassure the public that somebody is in charge. State and local health departments will contact travelers daily for 21 days after their departure from West Africa to check on their temperatures and other symptoms (21 days is the maximum period for symptoms to develop). If the returning health care workers fail to report as required, health officials will track them down using contact information they have provided upon entry."

"Christie Defiant on Quarantined Nurse: ‘My Job Is Not to Represent Her’

snip//

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie pushed back Monday afternoon against the characterization of his decision to release nurse Kaci Hickox from quarantine as a “reversal” from his previous policy.

"The reason she was put into the hospital in the first place was because she was running a high fever and was symptomatic. If you live in New Jersey, we will quarantine you in your home. That was always the policy. If you live outside the state and you are symptomatic, we’re not letting you go onto public transportation. It makes no common sense.”

75. White House: We Should ‘Celebrate’ Nurse Hickox, Not Make Her Live in a Tent

"Earnest told the press corps that the feeling of at least some people within the White House is that “the service of somebody like Kaci Hickox is something that we should honor and respect.” He added, “She didn’t travel over there because she was getting a big paycheck. Presumably, she’s not going to be inducted into the nurses’ hall of fame for it. She did it out of concern for her common man.”

“Her service and commitment to this cause is something that should be honored and respected,” Earnest repeated, “and I don’t think we do that by making her live in a tent for two or three days.”

I've been fighting the Ebola nonsense in the Mr. Conservative column on the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal this month. He accuses the president of politicizing Ebola, but has already written twelve different blogs this month where Ebola was the primary topic. Republicans are looking like fools for over-reacting to the few cases that have occurred.

The Dangers of Quarantines

snip//

"To make matters worse, two ambitious governors — Chris Christie of New Jersey and Andrew Cuomo of New York — fed panic by imposing a new policy of mandatory quarantines for all health care workers returning from the Ebola-stricken countries of West Africa through John F. Kennedy and Newark Liberty international airports. There is absolutely no public health justification for mandatory quarantines."
