Pat Robertson and others at his Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN) on Wednesday told a terminally ill woman that she was making a mistake if she chose to end her life on her terms. Earlier this year, Brittany Maynard moved to Oregon to take advantage of the states physician assisted suicide law after doctors told her that her brain cancer meant six more painful months to live.
I cant even tell you the amount of relief it provides me to know that I dont have to die the way that its been described to me the way that my brain tumor would take me on its own, she explained in a recent interview. Pat Robertson said that the culture of death created by so-called liberals was to blame for the Oregon law. They want to kill babies, they want to kill the terminally ill, he charged. They dont seem to honor life. And what we should do is honor life, not hasten death.
You want to pressure somebody? And you say to them, would you like to run up huge bills and burden your loved ones? Wouldnt it be easier just to leave this world? the TV preacher continued. The culture of death is so pervasive, and the pressure to end the life of these people, it is really tough. In the end, Robertson argued that the best choice for Maynard and others was to leave these things in Gods hands. She has brain cancer, but brain cancer can get healed, he opined. God can heal anything. http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2014/10/pat-robertson-shames-terminally-ill-woman-planning-suicide-for-promoting-liberal-culture-of-death/

Fuck cancer

(20,817 posts)of the same thing recently, about a year after diagnosis. It is, indeed, terminal, and there's not much that can be done except some treatments to prolong life a bit longer. The last couple of months were really bad, as they would be, and are starting to be, for this young woman, and I don't blame her at all for what she wants to do and I understand it totally.
I'm so sorry for your friend. Fuck cancer and FUCK Pat fucking Robertson.

(41,205 posts)Who go around smearing political candidates who think terminally ill people should be able to make their own end-of-life decisions, as somehow wanting to go around killing sick people: this affected or should I say INfected my constituency very directly in the 2010 elections so I feel quite strongly about it! Or, much worse, attack the terminally ill people themselves for wanting to make their own decisions. For example, in the UK, Terry Pratchett, who has early-onset Alzheimers, has expressed his desire to end his life at a time of his own choosing, and thinks that people should be legally entitled to make that decision. The horrible RW journalist Cristina Odone (also one of the main smearers of my ex-MP), not only disagrees, which is of course her right, but has viciously attacked Pratchett in print: '..ever since I heard Pratchett claim that only the "far Right" had any objections to assisted suicide, I have loathed him. For a man blessed with such talent and success, who wields an influence on so many young people, to rubbish life so publicly is disgraceful.'
Yes, I too once thought this sort of Christian Right viciousness didn't happen in England!!!
The point is also that in the past, medicine didn't have the power to keep many very sick people alive for months and years. Severely and terminally ill people usually died quickly. Modern medicine is a wonderful thing, but it's brought about its own dilemmas

(12,504 posts)along with the incessant and every increasing pain, suffering, seizures, paralysis etc will allow him to walk in the shoes of someone whom GOD has decided needs to suffer until they die. God, if there is one, never described makind as brainless and helpless...they sentient beings able to make decision and able to created the situations and circumstances to make those decisions a reality. Pat Robertson, is trying to tell us that there are some times when we are not permitted to make our own decisions and the moments when we can and cannot are upto Pat Robertson's determination. (1,712 posts)She was clearly not pressured, and no person in that position is advocating that anyone else's wishes or financial interests should be taken into account. His statement that god can heal brain cancer is just idiotic dickishness, and he should be shamed for trying to peddle false hopes.

(3,109 posts)as one who has no compassion. Death by brain cancer is ugly, very, very ugly. Painful, complete loss of dignity, loss of identity, no moral deity would require anyone to go through that kind of end.
