(30,481 posts)Just about all cops have pretty serious authority issues. Put the two together and the outcome is too often awful. It is amazing we have as few incidents as we do. Looks like the cops here were well measured and the guy with the camera is a blabbering fool. Would like to see additional video before and after. There is a lot untold here.

(30,481 posts)After reading your article and watching the video I don't see where anything is all that bad. They were in the car together. The guy was not just a random guy walking by. He was with a guy, who at the time, could have been under the suspicion of some pretty serious narcotics. Even the young man filming says he was way off. I really don't blame the cops for reacting the way they did here. They had no clue what was going on.
Cops need serious lessons in de-escalating problems while at the same time ensuring control. It is something they should have down pat by now.
NCTraveler
(30,481 posts)"I got out of the car and surrendered to you" - Didn't say "he" or "that guy".
"I have not committed a crime"
At the start of the video he is somewhat between the officer and the suspect. Seems he is a part of it in some way or at least worked really hard to make it that way.

(29,322 posts)in declaring his innocence and doing nothing wrong. The "I don't know but get on the ground and we'll figure it out" doesn't help the cops case in the limited frame.

(30,481 posts)Though, sometimes the cops really do need to sort things out. They have to have some form of control when doing so. Cops all too often hurt their own cause.

(1,712 posts)Read the story behind the video. He was not a criminal, but a guy who was in the wrong place at the wrong time, filming cops who were trying to detain him without any reasonable suspicion of wrongdoing. He should be congratulated for watching out for his friend, and not taking crap from cops when they had no basis to search, cuff, or interfere with him in any way.

Both men got out of the car and were ordered to the ground at gunpoint.

"The deputy says he smelled marijuana, and the driver, seen on the sidewalk in the footage, was arrested for driving while impaired by drugs."

marym625
(17,997 posts)Citizen that is unarmed and not a threat. None. Nada. Not any.
If these cops can't deal with people without pulling their guns they need to go. We are not a police state.

(26,060 posts)and I disagree with the majority of DUers on some issues so I'm pretty leery of using the ban hammer for disagreement. Everyone has their own experiences. Perhaps they're friendly with police who are good guys/gals so their instinct is to defend. I come from the state of stop and frisk so I've been complaining about police state tactics for a while now.

I can't believe anyone is DEFENDING cops pulling guns on unarmed citizens. And you just know if that man had walked forward, they would have shot him.

(11,155 posts)because the car remained in place and the driver was not acting odd?
The police can't read your mind and don't have x-ray vision to see that there are no weapons in the vehicle.
marym625
(17,997 posts)The ddriver was already on the ground. They were both out of the car. What are you advocating? Guns drawn at every pull over? AAnd if the person has done nothing wrong but does not comply with orders that are illegal just go ahead and shoot?

(11,155 posts)"We were on our way to my friends house and we were at a stop light. When the light turned green my friend began to make some weird motions and really freaking me out. I told him the light was green and he had a deer in a headlights look. A deputy walked up and asked what was going on I told him he was acting weird I dont know. He asked if we had any weapons and I said no.
At this time my friend was still doing some weird motions and finally answered the deputies question if he was okay. I had mentioned that were in the middle of the street and he came to and stepped on the gas and drove onto the corner. I jump out of the car and walked out with my hands up and was standing where the recording took place. Deputy drives up comes out of his vehicle with his gun drawn. Thats when I decided to record.

And again is the officer supposed to be a mind reader and know exactly what is in the mind of both men? The driver started to drive away that changed the situation and both people in the car had to bve checked.
Please put some thought into the knee jerk reactions. There are enough problems in law enforcement. When a officer handles a situation correctly, as he appears to have done in this case. Don't pile on him/her just for the fun of it.
marym625
(17,997 posts)Or anyone on this thread with your holier than thou assumption that we don't understand because we disagree.
I completely disagree with you and so does the law. Absolutely zero reason to pull the gun. Even less reason not to have put it back in the holster once the driver was on the ground. Or to threaten to beat and tase the man. Disgusting, illegal behavior by the officers.

(16,199 posts)Police need to stop treating citizens as slaves and subjects, and treat them with dignity like fellow human beings. Given that the guy wasn't driving (just a passenger), there was absolutely no reason to point a gun at him. The cop should be arrested for brandishing a firearm.
marym625
(17,997 posts)But only to an extent. Much more needs to be done. As someone said on the thread, had they shot him they would have gotten away with it

(11,155 posts)and get real nervous. Just because "At this time my friend was still doing some weird motions and finally answered the deputies question if he was okay. I had mentioned that were in the middle of the street and he came to and stepped on the gas and drove onto the corner."
HINT: If you are talking with a police officer and your friend is acting odd and suddenly starts to drive off it will, to put it in hunting terms, put the officer on point. He will act accordingly until he figures out what is happening and the officer will put you and your friend in the safest position, on the ground and handcuffed. Especially if he is alone at the time.
Believe it or not the officer is not a mind reader.

marym625
(17,997 posts)His reply further up. Don't understand why or how anyone can defend their actions. Just disgusting
whistler162
(11,155 posts)knee jerk reactions. THINK people. Look at what occurred before the second stop and the order to get out of the car and onto the ground, according to the second passenger. THINK about what could have been the alternative situation, car jacker and driver attempting to get officers attention.
marym625
(17,997 posts)First, the second passenger? I haven't read anywhere there was a third person in the vehicle.
Second, think about where we live and what our rights are.
Third, I have a big problem with guns being upholstered so easily, so often. If these officers are unable to deal with situations at a moments notice without pulling and pointing their weapons, then they should not be officers. Might as well just have gangs with weapons "policing" the streets.
Finally, just because I vehemently disagree with you doesn't mean I have not thought about it, read about or have any issues understanding it. I am very clear on this and the gun should not have been unholstered. At the very least, once the driver was on the ground it should have been put back in the holster
No excuse

I may not be around to witness it, but if this trend continues, violence will rule against the government and it's henchmen.
marym625
(17,997 posts)I believe that the majority of the protesters are peaceful. But people are pissed. And many have guns. The cops act like they did during the first days after Mike Brown's murder and there may be a war on the streets of Ferguson
