Obama Touts Heroism Of Ebola Health Care Workers

Last edited Wed Oct 29, 2014, 10:06 PM - Edit history (2)

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama on Wednesday touted the heroism of health care workers fighting Ebola abroad, further emphasizing the disagreement between himself and other politicians who want the workers quarantined when they come home.

"All of them have signed up to leave their homes and their loved ones and head straight into the heart of the Ebola epidemic," Obama said during a White House event honoring American doctors and nurses returning from West Africa, where the Ebola virus has killed nearly 5,000 people.

"We need to call them what they are, which is American heroes," he said, surrounded by doctors and nurses in the White House East Room. "They deserve our gratitude and they deserve to be treated with dignity and respect."

Some of the health care workers who shared the podium with Obama were within the 21-day monitoring period recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for people potentially exposed to Ebola, a White House official told The Huffington Post. The official added that the workers have followed CDC guidance and that none were symptomatic.

Obama, who has repeatedly sought to show he is unafraid of catching the virus from health workers officials have said shouldn't be contagious, shook hands with each of the workers after his speech."

I have many relatives that are and were doctors and nurses. They have my utmost respect and they are indeed courageous!

Last time they proved it to me was when they manned a triage tent here at the Boston Marathon Bombing. Yes they put there lives on the line as well, adirondacker.

that fact.

i do not think any of them did not do exactly what they were suppose to do. and still, those afraid, wanted to be afraid anyway ignoring facts. what do you do with that?

my use of correct was intended different meaning.

I agree 100% which you say what I intended to convey, not only are they heroes for dealing with the risks, then they have to come back and face the abuse with all of the above but the strange thing is the ill informed part. I can see where this type of ignorance and fear can spread among work places w/ people getting their facts from corporate news. What I don't understand is this place, thread after thread facts and clear evidence are clearly pointed out but same posters show up thread after thread w/ the same nonsense. Truly baffling.

just exactly as the facts support it.

it is not like they are only being asked to trust science. the cases we have had should be reassuring everyone. not the opposite in creating a hysteria of fear.

i agree. i have a very tough time with that also.

someone i truly respect said how the two nurses blew it. yet i am thinking blew what? virus free, contained.

doesnt sound like "blew it" to me.

the frontlines of the Ebola Crisis!

Paraphrasing..

"The best way to protect Americans is to stop it at its source.. West Africa.." Talking about those who are leaving straight into the heart of the epidemic.. "Call them what they are.. American Heros.. They should be treated with Digniity and Respect!

Thank you again, adirondacker~
