Study finds 99% correlation between US spending on Space Exploration and Suicides by Suffocation

And, how is Nicholas Cage making people drown themselves?! The same researchers found a 66% correlation between the number of films Nicholas Cage appears in yearly and the number of drowning in swimming pools:

Seriously: Correlation is not causation. Just because two number rise and fall together does not mean there is any causal relationship at all between them. But the newspaper editors of America just go right on claiming there is: Sex with more than 20 women reduces risk of prostate cancer, according to study

You can create your own spurious correlation here (please feel free to share your discoveries!):

One I think is not that spurious is this one:

I think using margarine instead of butter would contribute to the divorce rate. Margarine is horrible stuff, contributing to the deposit of arterial plaque at a far greater clip than butter. It also lacks anything but an oily flavor, unlike wonderful butter.

It would be a case of divorcing such a spouse before the margarine killed one.

Butter is much more satisfying and obviously is the basis of a lasting marriage in Maine as these statistics clearly prove.

85% correlation! Maybe it's in Cage's movie deal or he just gets on the phone and tells them:

Cage: Okay I'll do your movie but you have to work your connections and put 5 female editors on the Harvard Law Review or no deal...you got that?

A: Yes Mr Cage. We'll make it happen, again.

So much of our public discourse includes bamboozling people about statistics.

I predict that, over the long term, there would be a significant non-spurious correlation between number of visits to this site and Republican electoral defeats.

All I know is: every time I've seen the sun come up, I just finished making coffee.
