Earlier this year, a synthetic dairy start-up called Muufri (pronounced Moo-free" was founded by two bioengineers in California - Perumal Gandhi and Ryan Pandya. Theyre working on perfecting an artificial cow's milk made from a special variety of yeast that has been genetically engineered to produce milk proteins.
Nicknamed an out-of-body udder, this system is designed to produce milk that retains the taste and health benefits of real milk, setting it apart from soy, rice, and almond milk varieties. Because as nice as soy-based ice-cream can be, it will never match the popularity of regular milk-based ice-cream, but what if Muufri ice-cream can get the taste just right?

I wonder how this will go over. Even if the taste and texture are just right, people may refuse to drink it since it was made by scientists. Having less reliance on cows would be very good for our environment though.

(22,836 posts)As much as we love cheese etc.. milk from cows is specific to the needs of cow.. as human milk is specific to the needs of humans.. deer milk to deer. etc etc etc.. have never understood the thing about milk.. even the calcium benefit.. if Vit D is not added, your body would have a hard time absorbing that calcium in the first place.. don't ya think?
Now faux milk.. sigh.. what next..I drink almond milk (no allergies to nuts for me) but even as I drink it.. I never have understood the milk part.. it is almond drink.. water and almonds.. but I guess we have a "tradition" about milk..

(39,215 posts)I was never able to feed any of my 3 daughters. I tried with the first one but she was allergic to my milk. I am sure that in more populated areas there were those who did - when I am talking about years ago I am talking about 1958. My doctors did not offer to help and no one else did either.

(5,637 posts)good enough. Sorry you had problems. Babies are not allergic to their mothers milk.... Only sensitive to something (often dairy proteins) she may be passing thru the milk. But 1958 was the year La Leche League formed, specifically to stem the avalanche of corporate undermining of women natural ability to nourish their young... Sigh.

I can see a variety of values in an artificial product, but, I think I'll stick to Moojuice

(365 posts)I used to drink a lot of milk, but I have some ethical concerns about the dairy industry, so the last couple of years I've pretty much given it up. I miss it.
