Things could go two ways on Tuesday.

One way would be for the Senate to switch over to a Republican majority. I have given up on hopes that the House would flip to the Democrats. If that happens, things are going to get really ugly, really quickly, and we're going to have a rocky two years until 2016. With a Senate majority for Republicans, there will be no chance for any progressive action to be taken in Congress. Instead, Congress will be a body that has as its only goal to make President Obama completely powerless. Instead of passing bills designed to move this country forward, they will attempt to repeal the ACA, reverse directions on things like equality for LGBT people, and further reduce the ability of people to vote.

The other way will be for Democrats to hold onto a majority in the Senate. If that happens, we will continue to have pretty much the same situation we've had in recent years. There won't be much change in the bills that get passed, we'll still have judicial and other appointments held up by the Republicans, and President Obama will have to use whatever pressure he can put on Congress just to keep the government in operation, just as he has had to do in the past. He did get ACA passed. He did get DADT thrown out. He did make some things happen that were much needed, but was thwarted in doing many other things.

At the same time, on Tuesday, we may elect a few more Democratic Governors, elect more Democrats to state legislatures in a number of states, and we may watch as some of the Red states slowly turn Purple.

Whatever happens, 2016 is just two years down the road, and everyone will need to start thinking about that election. On November 5, that process will begin. It's not too early to start thinking about it, beginning on Wednesday of next week. It will be time to find candidates for every level of government and promote their efforts to get elected.

GOTV 2016 begins on Wednesday. I suggest that we get started with it right away and pull together to make things happen in 2016. Whatever happens on Tuesday, it will be time on Wednesday to start working on the next election.

GOTV 2014 and Beyond! Starting on Wednesday, my tagline will read GOTV 2016!
