Kirk Cameron denounced as ‘pagan’ and ‘papist’ for encouraging celebration of Halloween

http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2014/10/kirk-cameron-denounced-as-pagan-and-papist-for-encouraging-celebration-of-halloween/

The Christian News Network reports that Kirk Cameron is coming under fire from other evangelical priests for his claim that Halloween is a holiday that Christians should take back from the pagans....

Cameron further claimed that the holiday entailed Christians dressing up “in costumes as the devil, ghosts, goblins and witches precisely to make the point that those things were defeated and overthrown by the resurrected Jesus Christ. The costumes poke fun at the fact that the devil and other evils were publicly humiliated by Christ at His resurrection. That’s what the Scriptures say, that He publicly humiliated the devil when He triumphed over power and principality and put them under his feet.”...

But Mike Gendron, of ProclaimingtheGospel.org, told Christian News Network that Cameron is gravely mistaken, because historically the rituals of Halloween are connected to the “pagan” practices of Roman Catholicism, and are therefore not consonant with biblical Christianity.

“The two faiths are diametrically opposed to one another,” Gendron said. “I strongly disagree with Kirk Cameron and would encourage him to avoid celebrating anything that has to do with the pagan practices of the apostate Roman Catholic Church.”

"When these guys talk about 'Christian', they do not include you! They think you're a devil worshipper. If they ever rammed gays back into the closet and women back into the kitchen sans footwear, they'd go right back to railing against 'the whore of Babylon' in every sermon."

I mean a tremendous amount of pagan beliefs, rituals, etc were assimilated into the Catholic Church, as well as the larger body of Christianity, in the process of trying to convince large swaths of the Earth to convert to Monotheism.

To believe otherwise is to think that Bunnies and Eggs have anything to do with Jesus, for instance.

But the standard rap of Protestants against the Papists was Idolatry. The fact that the Church appropriated the pagan holidays doesn't make the Church pagan, and it's not a charge I've seen outside of this guy's twisted mind.

My brother and I went to a Catholic retreat once (his idea, he was trying to make nice with his father-in-law). It was held in a school that the Catholics had grafted onto an ancient Indian sacred site, and they were bragging about the strong spiritual power of the area and the "miracles" which had occurred there -- all of which would doubtless be due to the genius of the locale, and not the grafting of the One True Religion onto the "pagan" site. (if you believe in that sort of thing, of course) The Church was good at that crap.

On October 31st while Kirk Cameron is urging people to celebrate Halloween, our ministry will be encouraging people to remember the Reformers who were brutally tortured, murdered and burned at the stake by the Roman Catholic Church for defending the Gospel of Jesus Christ.”

They don't call them that. Generally the only Christians who refer to clergy as priests are Catholics, Orthodox, and some Anglicans and Lutherans.

Evangelicals might call their leaders pastors or ministers or elders, but not priests. It's weird, though, seeing them throw brickbats at Bibleman himself. "Celebrity" converts are particularly prized by the folks who claim they are set apart, not worldly, and not interested in the trappings of secular society.
