I'm Chip!

There's been a lot of threads over the past couple months about white privilege and whether or not it's very prevalent in society today. My son loves Dave Chapelle and the stand up routine he does about his friend Chip:

Last night I went up to Madison from my home in Northern Illinois to take my youngest to dinner and a movie. She's a freshman up there. It's about a two hour drive.

On the way home, I got pulled over for apparently speeding, 74 in a 55. In my defense, I was driving a very small car that I never drive. It didn't seem like I was going very fast, but I was not watching the speedometer very closely. My large truck is broke. The only explanation I can come up with as I do not generally speed is that the low center of gravity makes it seem like I'm going slower.

I did not have an up to date insurance card and was foolishly not wearing my seat belt as well. I'm a big guy and the seat belt fits badly. All in all not a performance to be proud of.

I gave the police officer my ID, explained to him I was not driving my normal vehicle, etc. He kindly let me off with a $10 seat belt violation. He laughed with me as I told him the last time I got a speeding ticket was 5 years ago. My truck was broke and I was driving my son's small car. He seemed like a great guy. As I pulled away though, I thought of my son and declared out loud, I was Chip! I told my son about it this morning, he laughed and said, "You're lucky you are white!"

I guess if a 20 year old can see it, it's pretty obvious. I can only imagine what would have happened to me if I was black and did this in Ferguson, MO. My $100 evening would have turned into a $1,000 evening no doubt.
