dozen Long Island school districts may be unlawfully barring the enrollment of immigrant students, according to a statewide survey conducted by the New York Civil Liberties Union.
In all, approximately 20-percent of school districts in state have been identified by the group as putting up what it called illegal barriers to unaccompanied or undocumented students, possibly creating a chilling effect on such students and attempting to register. The advocacy group also chided the New York State Education Department for failing to enforce its own guidelines, but the agency fired back at the nonprofit advocacy group.
The New York Civil Liberties Union has never identified a single student who has been denied enrollment based on immigration status, New York State Education Department spokesman Dennis Tompkins said in a statement. When the Department received a report regarding Hempstead, we acted swiftly to ensure the students were enrolled. If NYCLU is aware of a case, they should inform us immediately.

(7,661 posts)did not get any replies. This kind of action hurts innocent children, and we should not blame them for their parent's actions.
On another note, I was a carpenter and I do not like the fact these people have to live in the shadows and accept a reduced pay rate. It clearly hurts them, but, it also hurts the folks that are here legally by driving their wages down.

We allowed their fathers to mow our lawns and trim our bushes but we will not educate their children since they don't wear Lacoste and carry their books in Coach backpacks.....

(49,212 posts)I wish I could say I'm surprised, but in the 90s a majority of voters out here in CA were willing to exclude undocumented children from public schools via ballot proposition. That never took effect because the courts are not so reactionary, but I can remember the walls of my high school being papered with posters when the proposition passed telling kids that they were still entitled to go to school and that nobody at the school was going to report them to immigration.

(7,661 posts)at no fault of their own. Our government has had a hand in creating this problem with the passing of NAFTA and allowing corporations to advertise jobs in Mexico City and such. We should never punish these children, it really upsets me to no end. Thank you for the reply.

It's interesting to see the contrast of the quality of public education out on long island vs in the city where I am a social work student now. Maybe interesting isn't the word. Disturbing fits better.
I was one of the only Hispanic kids in my school at the time, so this doesn't surprise me much.

(7,661 posts)friends who I grew up with. Many had to leave because housing costs and taxes. Those who have stayed live in the homes they grew up in. Sorry I did not make that clear.
As for the schools out here, I have a son who is learning disabled and we are not too pleased with the schools just pushing him through the system. Of course we understand it could be worse elsewhere and it seems to be the way things are done these days.
