The Art of the Tap and Obama

Gabby Douglas and the Art of the Tap

In gymnastics, whether men’s or women’s, vault is the power event. Beam and pommel horse—often likened to one another—are psychological. Floor is about endurance; rings, strength; and parallel bars, precision. And the bars—uneven for women and horizontal-high for men—rely on timing. An entire routine, and the hopes of a whole country, can be undone by the tiniest delay, the smallest hesitation. Whether a release that launches a gymnast over the bar will result in a re-catch or a complete miss that sends crashing to the ground depends on one movement: “the tap.”

To understand the tap, imagine a full rotation around the bar as a clock, with the gymnast’s body as the hour hand. The tap takes place between midnight and around seven or eight o’clock, depending on the desired end result. Starting in a handstand at the top of the bar, the gymnast swings down to three o’clock, bending at the hip into what’s called a pike position along the way. At a precise moment along the descent—usually around five o’clock, depending on the move that will follow—the gymnast arches his or her back and the kicks behind the body. Finally, as the gymnast passes six o’clock and starts rising towards the other side of the bar, he or she pulls her legs forward, and hollows the body (a soft curve of the back, to create a slight “C” shape) to prepare to launch into the move.

This reminds me about what this President has gone through with the Republicans. They have put him through hell and he has out maneuvered him every time. They wanted him a one term President. They have blocked his every move to do right by the American people. They have disrespected him. He is a wartime President and every respect they wrung out of us for Bush, they have denigrated this President ten fold.

Let's not forget his disappointed supporters. It was easy peasy, I voted for him, twice! I expected it all to be done yesterday. Well sure I left him to stand on his own after I voted, it was his job not mine. Obama sucks, he is just like Bush. Really, dear God we are worse off than I thought if Democrats truly believe that. Heath Care, single payer he should have just snapped his fingers and made it so.

On the parallel bars, hesitation can mean defeat. With this President hesitation means we have a thoughtful President they weighs the odds and the repercussions before making a decision. He thinks. He is about endurance and strength and precision.

He is my President!
