Mia Love, the right-wing GOP darling who nearly upset Jim Matheson in 2012 - though failed miserably after polls had her up double-digits - finds herself in a barn burner of a race with Doug Owens. Owens is a Democrat looking to keep Utah's 4th congressional district Democratic - which is pretty remarkable considering it's a fairly conservative district.
Love, though, once again has failed to close the deal. After leading Owens by double-digits in the polls back during summer, Love's lead has all but vanished and in one poll, she actually trails Owens.
Owens happens to be the son of Wayne - a former Utah congressmen who represented the 2nd congressional district back in the 1970s and then again in the 80s and 90s. Wayne worked on both Bobby and Teddy Kennedy's presidential campaigns as their western coordinator.
If Love loses, it would be a huge set back for Republicans not only locally, but nationally. She's being groomed for bigger and better things - namely the U.S. Senate and, as a black woman Mormon, has gained traction nationally among the GOP. Unfortunately, locally, she's struggled. In a district that was tailor-made for the GOP during its creation a few years ago, Love really shouldn't be doing as badly as she is - and yet, as the race enters the final days, she very well could lose.
Much of this is because Love is a horrible campaigner. She can't connect with Utah voters and stumbles defending remarks that we should do away with student loans (something she admits to using to her benefit). In the recent debates, she was schooled by Owens.
I'm not sure if Owens is going to win - but his chances seem much better at this point than Matheson's back in 2012. Matheson, of course, eked out a very narrow victory, stunning a lot of pundits who had Love winning comfortably.
We'll see. But if Love loses, hopefully that'll be the end of her and she can return to being the mayor of her small Utah town.

(89,239 posts)vote for any republican no matter how much they suck will not vote for her.
you say she is a horrible campaigner so this means she is not able to make up for the loss of the racist republicans by appealing to others with her campaign style.

(20,450 posts)run. Those racist folk don't like her down there.
Does she think she has a better chance this time around? I think not. They only pretend to like us knee-grows but don't let us get too far.
She'll still be the mayor of her little small Utah town.
Sigh...
