The Rude Pundit - Job Well-Done, Media: The Destruction of the Vote

The Rude Pundit is not going to predict whether or not the Republican Party will take over the Senate on Tuesday (or after run-offs in Georgia and Louisiana). His head says, "Of course." His gut says, "No way." Both have been egregiously wrong before when not in sync, as a mad cocaine and tequila weekend in San Francisco 10 years ago showed him. What he does know is that the speculation about whether or not the Republicans would win back the Senate began about five seconds after the 2012 election results were in. He knows that the drumming of the media since then has been that the takeover would happen, that Republicans would win back a majority, that the wretched worm-that-walks, Mitch McConnell, would become the majority leader.

Here's America's Greatest Poin, Nate Silver, prognosticating in February 2013 like we didn't just finish an election three months earlier: "Summing up the possibilities across all 35 Senate races yields a net gain of four to five seats for Republicans, just short of the six they would need to win back the majority. However, the margin of error on the calculation is very high at this early stage." So, of course, everyone took the story to be "Republicans Might Win the Senate." (This is not to mention Silver's November 16, 2012 column, "Democrats Unlikely to Regain House in 2014," which sits somewhere between "Fer chrissake" and "No duh.&quot By July 2013, the New York Times's David Firestone was already bemoaning what would happen when Republicans take over the Senate.

So that's what we've heard, on an endless loop, for 18 months: Republicans will win the Senate in 2014. It's a psychic beatdown by the mainstream media, let alone insane right-wing radio babblers and Fox "news." We're left with a disgust with the whole process, like someone telling you that Bruce Willis is dead in The Sixth Sense before you see the movie. All you've got then is a half-assed story of a mopey kid. (Oh, spoiler alert.)

The cycle of our elections has become a masochistic exercise, a perversion of whatever "democracy" is supposed to be. God help you poor bastards in states with tight races, where you must be seeing ads with a density and repetitiousness that'd break Alex in A Clockwork Orange quicker than a stream of violence. All you wanna do is sit down for an evening of NCIS: Poughkeepsie or wherever it is now, and you're inundated with a barrage of messages and images, telling you how horrible one candidate is, how awful the other is, how one will take your guns, how one will abort your 5 year-old, how one will get us all terror-murdered, how one will let Muslims dance on your entrails. This isn't democracy. It's an endurance test. And you can bet the ads aren't going anywhere because that's gravy to the meat of the local and national channels.

You combine the disgust with the whole flagellation-by-campaign-commercials with the endless news that the Senate is lost with being told that everything is going to hell (when, really, really, it's actually pretty damn good out there right now) and with voting restrictions in several states that are, quite humorously, affecting Republican and Democratic candidates (right now, Rick Scott sure wishes there were a few more days of early voting), and there's no reason not to throw up your hands and wonder if you should bother. We cannot sustain this. It is as if every election becomes a battle over who can cause the most PTSD to the general population, so scarred by the images and words that they'll vote for anyone to make it stop. Or just stay home and cover their eyes and ears and ignorantly hope that no one does anything to impact their day-to-day existence.

Congratulations, media. You've reduced hope from transformation of the nation to the whimper of "Leave me alone, please." When we parse this election out, there will be time to blame the Democratic Party for its failings. But it will not be theirs alone. It will be all of ours.

Elections should be more like sports seasons. We go through it for a few months and it's over, and only the die-hard fans follow the machinations of what goes on during the off-season. For most fans of losing teams, there's a sense of "Thank Christ that's over until next year." In the Times today (now that Nate Silver doesn't work there anymore, it's safe for people to speak out without fearing his wrath), an op-ed by a Duke professor and student calls for an end to the midterms: &quot T)he two-year cycle isn’t just unnecessary; it’s harmful to American politics. The main impact of the midterm election in the modern era has been to weaken the president," often one that was just elected two years before after a long campaign. That's messed up.

We are defeating ourselves, constantly at the midterms. It's a calculated effect that both parties count on. And, yes, it keeps getting worse and worse. How the hell do we try to make this better? How do we attempt to reinvigorate the act of voting in the midterms as more important than a Facebook quiz? Or can we?

Getting rid of the constant need for campaigning for the house side would be a huge plus. It might suck to keep some people longer than others, but really, change isn't that constant when it comes to who is residing in those seats. Most leave of their own volition outside of the occasional surprise as most are near-lifers until a better private sector handout comes along.

And they're all about PROFIT. Not reporting actual news. Or public service. Or reporting news the public needs to know (unless it's partial information, leaves 1/2 to 2/3 of the story out and twists that beyond recognition of anything even sensical much less true or fact-based). They're PROFIT-MONGERS. Pure and simple. They'll don't give a SHIT about Democracy. Or fair elections. Or public health. They are NEVER EVER above blatant lying and fearmongering. Whatever makes 'em a buck from idiot viewers and advertisers. They're propaganda sluts. They pimp whatever the Koch Bros (whom they've made MILLIONS OFF OF THIS YEAR AND PREVIOUS YEARS) tells them to.

Don't expect anything from them. Except profitmaking (for them and their corp and wealthy GOP-loving pimps) by twerking their GOP-driven and money-driven propaganda all in our faces every day.

I HATE the mainstream media.

PeeEss: They'll destroy ANYTHING for money. Including your country. Your health. And your LIFE. They and the likes of them are what run and OWN this country now. Until that changes, expect nothing else.

WELL SAID!!! Last night, watching the local drivel that we mainly watch for weather and sports (and they get that wrong enough too) I heard for the nine millionth time "unpopular president." When Obama goes anywhere, the crowds are enormous and they're cheering. Wonder if the same crowds will show up when the fuckers vote for impeachment. I know I'll be there, but doubtful the mainstream media will be.

When W's approval rating was around 19 points, I never heard "unpopular president" every time he was mentioned.

And that's how you know who owns and controls the media. They kiss GOP/Koch ass, while executing perpetual hate-mongering, fear-driven, ignorance-fed propaganda wars against everyone else (including anyone GOP/Corprat owners/Kochs don't like - like poor people, old people, working people, etc.)

And the real disappointing thing is that as soon as this one is over we start all over again right away...we are trapped in a whirlpool of money flow and can't get out.

midterms should be abolished. In addition, political "seasons" should be reduced to three months by law. If a candidate cannot get a message across in three months, he/she doesn't have the knowledge and ability to govern. No one need be reminded that elections should be publicly funded. No outside money in anyone's campaign, none: local, state, and federal. If a candidate gets any outside funding, the candidate should be disqualified immediately. Media ads should be limited to 8 per month; 2 each week. Voting times should be from 8 am Friday until mid-night on Sunday, with Friday being a national holiday. Only paper and pencil ballots allowed for all elections. Absentee ballots requested and returned one month before election week-end. Once a voter is properly registered and receives a registration card (free), no other ID will be required.

In addition, members of the Senate and House should be elected every four years. All elections during the same year. Term limits for Senators and House members should be the same as for the president: 2 four year terms. All lobbying should be abolished. Members of government should be able to do their jobs without outside influence.

All voters who follow the circus called America's elections have their own ideas about starting to clean up the mess we refer to as "politics." I have outlined a few of mine.

Now that this country is down to 25 newspaper and struggling, and then we have a foreign national by name of Rupert Murdoch controlling who knows what and spewing his deceit and deception to the world wide masses, there might be 8 total oligarchy corporations running one television station or another, and then to top it all off we have 10 minutes of commercials selling us everything from a plane ride to having sex during the news every 30 minutes, say a lot about this materialistic country.
My impression of todays news is a commercial that is weighted for greed, no news, just greed, sell the plane ride and hope some one can get there sex thru a pill, because to be really important in news, the oligarchy has broken it down into 20 minutes of sound bites on nothingness, and this democracy is really about the plane ride and the sex drug at dinner time.
Since we really own the air waves and the rights to the radio channels we should go down to Washington, file a class action suit and take back our public forum, this is the only way to have republic.
Those of us that vote can legally whine about the current events in this country and those of you that don't vote sit on the side whine and continue your whining because this election is about the environment, education, campaign finance laws, voting, ect..... and the U.S. Supreme Court and if the right wing republicans get this power we are totally screwed and they will start dismantling our entitlements to Wall Street and you have nothing to say except listen to your favorite corporate commercial.
So if you like commercials, and, all you think about is your team playing in the Super Bowl, College Bowl,a Championship, because if that is your goal to see what the 10 million dollar corporate commercial is all about or the 30 second commercials are going to be like and your team, think of what that money could have done for the country and your costs, it is only a game and some parts of the media has made your life into a game of the haves and the have not commercials, your being will go on after the game and your vote or lack of voting will determine the failure or success of the democracy
