Husband and I took the twins with us to our polling place so they could see how seriously we take voting, and the subject line is what my darling daughter earnestly explained to her twin brother (who just wanted to get to school and not be late).
We are still working on the nuances, but she gets it. I am so proud!
Oh, and we voted!

(7,947 posts)When it comes to politics, you can't get rid of tribalism.

(10,559 posts)Neither do I.
Republican's don't want us to vote, and their policies literally kill people.
We are American citizens, and my children belong to the tribe of humanity.

They may be lovely people, but the policies they endorse can be summed up as "batshit crazy".

(15,558 posts)Maybe you imagine our democratic administration's foreign policy as bloodless...

(10,559 posts)They do not believe in "harmless Republican politicians".
If you do not support electing democrats, you might be on the wrong board.

(15,558 posts)but I imagine you know that. Being raised in my house, my son is quite familiar with my far-left politics. That said, I've always told him I want him to discover his beliefs on his own. All I ask is that he make his choices based on his values and intellect. It's highly unlikely my boy will ever vote republican, but if did, that's his choice and privilege. I don't want him to be my clone or parrot, I want him apply his awesome mind and reach his own conclusions. What would disappoint me most, would be if he opted for the lazy binary politics practiced and promoted by partisans.

(10,559 posts)Since these are values which the Republican Party worships, the overlap does get confusing.

(1,596 posts)I mean I surely am not defending any freaking republicans, but to teach your young children to hate and to think whenever the word republican is brought up she is going to think of them as murderers.
Okay, maybe I am weird, but that is just sick.
IdaBriggs
(10,559 posts)if there is one.
In your case, I am rather proud that you don't like the honesty with which my daughter is being raised.

(1,596 posts)I just bristle at the thought of teaching young children to hate. No matter who the target group is, it's wrong. I have some conservative neighbors, and no way, no how would I ever teach my child to hate them and fear them. I just feel it is deep down wrong as teaching young children to hate gays or Muslims or blacks or any swath of people.

(948 posts)How would you feel if your neighbors were klansmen or nazis? Rethugs are just a whitewashef verdiin ofvthose groups.

Elections are important, and people die when we have republican people in power.
See: Aids Crisis, 9/11 Attack by Terrorists, Middle East Wars, and countless dead from lack of health care for starters.
Perverse. Seriously?

(7,208 posts)I want to raise my daughters to be intelligent and compassionate people. They will get a feel for my politics as they grow and mature, but they should be allowed to come to their own conclusions.
