I vote in the heavily gerrymandered PA 18th district in a very red rural precinct. All the signs out front were for Republican candidates. And, even though I knew there was no Democratic candidate running opposite Tim Murphy, it was depressing to see a lone Republican candidate for congress.

(6,393 posts)In the MA ballot today, we have some Democrats running completely unopposed because nobody was put up for it.
It happens. It's not uncommon.

(5,946 posts)why is he not running!!! Yes, we are a gerrymandered district, but it took a long time for him to get his web page up and it is skeletal, never has any events posted under the slot for events. Found out he gives weekly speeches at retirement homes. The incumbent republican has called me a lot, had walked down my street and knocked on my door, has had several phone town jhalls that I have been invited to join in, has weekly townhalls in every city in the district - the democrat - nothing, You know it doesn't cost money to walk down the street. When I worked in the distant past, I used to set up the phone group messages for hundreds of workers - it was not that expensive.
Ok he only got 100K in donations, still wasn't taht enough to pay for anything? I am not even talking about ads, just something - like announce where he will be on the street on his web site?
He claims it was an over sight and that he has been lots of places - how would I know though? I think he was just put up to put someone up. I don't even want to vote for him because he didn't care enough.
And most of the people seem to be running unopposed like our popular mayor, but I finally found a job there is competition for - county clerk! so that is what I am going to vote for, and the propositions. School board - vote for 3, there are only 3 people running. Sheriff one person running, senator, virtually one person running. ridiculous.

(94,333 posts)There seem to be a lot of people complaining about how the Democratic Party and it's entities campaign, but fixing the problem seems to be someone else's responsibility. If there was no Democratic candidate, I'm guessing you're in a solid Red district with long odds to win. If you weren't willing to put in the effort, why do you assume someone else should have?

(177 posts)The Koch brothers are running a well-financed smear campaign against our long-time member of the state senate while Democrats can't even be bothered to get a candidate on the ballot.

That surely has to be taken care of by organization earlier.

(23,267 posts)There were a bunch of judges in the non-partisan section. "Vote for no more than 3" with 3 incumbent judges running. It would be like voting for Castro in Cuba. No need to stroke their egos any more.

(23,947 posts)...there are typically may state level and county elections with Republicans running unapposed.
I have wondered - what sort of victory party does one throw oneself when your win was assured because you were the only one running. Wouldn't seem like much cause for a big "whoop-do-doo."

(18,402 posts)At least 2/3 of the races for state and county races on my ballot (and there were a lot of them) consisted of unopposed Democrats (not only no Republicans but no Greens or Libertarians either). And to all intents and purposes, our federal House of Representative candidate is de facto unopposed: Danny Davis will win his 10th term representing the 7th Congressional District by an overwhelming margin (usually 80% or more of the vote).

(135 posts)If we want the house back we have to have unapologetic liberal progressive democrats running for office in every race, otherwise the Republican wins, time and time again.
