Rachel repeated a history lesson she mentioned a couple days ago,

mid-term elections during 2d term of presidents 'always' result in congressional losses of presidents' party, average # seats lost 6, today, 7, so while this feels extraordinary, it's not.

In a lame duck session after the 1998 elections, the Republican-controlled House voted to impeach Clinton.

it follows an unfortunate and stupid pattern in which people (especially, it would seem, Democrats) don't get off their dead asses and vote in midterms. So as bad as it seems it's not unexpected. I am trying to look on the bright side - I think the GOPers will overreach and by 2016 they won't have anything to run on and will get their asses handed to them. And the Senate seats that will be contested in that election will fall more toward the Dem side. It sucks but it's temporary.
