One reason why we lost in Kansas

A major reason - Democrats simply did not show up to vote.

Looking at my own county. In 2012, the numbers were 16,000 for Romney and 11,000 for Obama.

Now, here's 2014

12,774 for Lynn Stinking Jenkins
5,993 for Democratic challenger.

10,122 for Brownback
8,779 for Davis

10,303 for Roberts
8,468 for the Induhpendent

Democratic candidates for state legislature - 7,708
Republican candidates for state legislature - 11,292

Now split the difference between Jenkins and Roberts it is 2,471. Assume that 1/3 of them are Obama voters voting for Jenkins (probably a huge over-estimate) and 2/3 of them are Romney voters voting for Orman.

that gives an approximate total of 6,817 Obama voters who came to the polls and 11,951 Romney voters. And then I looked up the exact numbers instead of using what I remembered above.

out of 17,058 Romney voters 70% of them came to the polls.
out of 11,358 Obama voters 60% of them came to the polls

78% of Davis voters were Obama voters (the other 22% being Romney voters). Davis lost to Brownback by
390,042 to 422,796.

The difference between 70% and 60% is 16% more participation by Republicans. Increase Davis' Democratic total by 15% and he wins 433,000 to 423,000.

Oh, and Obama got 439,908 votes in 2012, compared to only 423,000 for Brownback this year.

If 100% of both Romney and Obama voters showed up, Democrats would still lose most races in Kansas.

This year though, if that had happened, (all voters showing up, or at least as many as showed up in 2012 (which was not all)) at least Davis would have won, and probably Orman too.

But it seems like the media spent at least a month saying "Brownback is probably gonna lose" and hearing that, Republican voters got fired up to make sure that didn't happen.

But really, looking at the totals, about 19,000 in my county showed up to vote, which is about the same number as in 2006 when Democratic Governor Kathleen Sebelius was re-elected and Nancy Boyda beat Republican Congressman Jim Ryun (but lost my county by about 9,400 to 9,200).
