that came off of 4chan was that the brony community spun off of it after being harassed to distraction there. And that fandom is the nicest and most welcoming place I can think of and is remarkably self-policing. Unpleasant people get shunned or shamed like in no other internet community I have seen and they actually go away.

but I got sucked in a couple of years ago. The show fills a need for me - something sweet without being sticky, smart, just snarky enough, utterly devoid of cynicism and beautifully done, especially in terms of animation and voice acting. And I have been an animation nerd all my life. Lauren Faust has said time and again she wanted to create a good show that all ages and genders could enjoy - something smart and funny. I'd say she exceeded her wildest dreams and even she was pleasantly shocked by the brony phenomenon.

Bronies get a lot of wholly undeserved heat. Never interacted with a nicer group of people and brony-run charities have raised tens of thousands of dollars for many great causes.
