This is so fucked up, I don't have words. It's shit like this that forces Progressive Dems to think about 3rd parties and such.
THE BLUE DOG DEMS BEGIN THEIR PITCH TO PURGE LIBERAL DEMS FROM THE PARTY
Posted on November 8, 2014 * by Joshua De Leon * Ring of Fire
Joe Manchin (D-WV) is a coal-backing, right-wing-minded Democrat and a conservative sellout. Crooks and Liars reported that Manchin stepped down from NoLabels, a club for other, like-minded Democrats who sell out their own party.
Democrats like Manchin not only make their party weak, but they also make the party look desperate for votes by pandering to the Republican, conservative voters. Manchin pushes coal production, bashes the Affordable Care Act, and knocks the president every chance he gets. He feels that by doing so, he will appeal to Republican voters thus sealing a spot in Congress for a Democrat. That logic is beyond broken.
According to Time Magazine:
Manchin, one of the most conservative Democrats in Congress, could fill a key role next year as the Senate Republican majority tries to implement its agenda, including authorizing the Keystone XL pipeline and raising the Affordable Care Acts workweek from 30 hours to 40 hourstwo proposals that Manchin supports and believes have enough bipartisan support to reach 60 votes for passage. He called a Keystone vote a slam-dunk, and he considers the Obamacare fix crucial despite a nonpartisan congressional report that found it would reduce the number of people receiving employment-based coverage by about 1 million people and increase the deficit by about $25 billion over the next five years.
Democrats like Manchin only weaken the party and the liberal movement. Democrats like Manchin are why the party bungled this years midterms, even losing blue states to the Repubs. Crooks and Liars noted that Manchin just wants to see the Senate work. And if it works with Republicans at the helm, passing lots of right-wing corporate agenda items, thats totally fine with him.

(111,169 posts)because he's simply gotten so wrapped up in his own dogma that he's neglected to look at who the voters are, something that's epidemic among conservative Democrats.
I would point out to Manchin that Mark Udall, a staunch Third Way Democrat, was defeated in Colorado, while we in NM sent the more liberal Tom Udall back for another term.

(7,283 posts)We have to start sometime or this party will become a carbon copy of pathetic making it indistinguishable from the repub's.

(22,911 posts)He is a centrist which makes him left of Republican Party candidates in that state by a wide margin. Manchin caucuses with the Democrats, and more often than not votes for the national Democratic position. I'm glad we have him from that state. I would be angry as hell to have him represent us from PA, NY, CA, CT, OR, MA etc. etc. I would be unhappy if he were the Democratic Senator from a more purple state like Colorado or Ohio even. But I'll take a Joe Manchin from West Virginia, Alabama or Utah any day, for the intermediate future at least.

In a way, ROF is sounding like it would like the party to purge the likes of Manchin.

(5,953 posts)There are two distinct strategies for Democrats to win in Deep Red States. Manchin represents one of them, which hasn't been too successful, on average.
One way: Run to the right, and try and convince Republicans, and Republican-leaning independent voters who are disenchanted with the GOP that these Blue Dog Democrats are JUST LIKE Republicans, only not as crazy, and not as corrupt.
That's one way, and that's what they tried this time.
The other way: Given that only about 40% of voters actually turn out to vote on election day, why not find out what the 60% who DON'T vote want, and what it would take to make them turn out on election day. My guess is that there are masses of left-leaning voters who don't vote because they don't see any difference between the parties. And that's not a BUG, it's a FEATURE if you're trying STRATEGY ONE (above).

(15,882 posts)better now, but one has to think. That is much harder.
A choice between a party that put 15 million new people in poverty, or the party that put 15 million new people in poverty. <- that's hard.
One might think it is time to choose something other than the two plantations,

Even if one know, there are those who like the plantation. All you have to do is grovel to stay.
I think Bernie Sanders suggestion of a 50 state org, consisting of people who want to get behind a set of progressive principles, starting with throwing Citizen's United in the trash is an excellent idea. It's probably the only thing that will help, apart from another Civil War, the American antidote to plantations.

(34,648 posts)I want a fifty state strategy with politicians who back the policies the PEOPLE want, not what DC thinks is the middle. We have to stop ignoring the poor and oppressed in favor of those who already have. We are fucking up and losing the lower class. The Senate looks like the House of Lords and the Congress the House of Nobles. I'm just waiting for a 'just let them eat cake!" moments from someone.
