Nurse Kaci Hickox: GOP governors exploited Ebola panic for political gain
MARTIN PENGELLY, THE GUARDIAN
17 NOV 2014 AT 10:48 ET
Kaci Hickox, the nurse who found herself in the middle of a political storm when she was quarantined on her return from west Africa despite testing negative for Ebola, has launched a blistering attack on two overzealous state governors, Chris Christie of New Jersey and Paul LePage of Maine, whom she accused of seeking to advance their careers at her expense.
Of the former, who is widely seen as a possible Republican nomination for president in 2016, she said: Politicians who tell lies
will hopefully never make it to the White House.
Writing for the Guardian , Hickox said: I was quarantined against my will by overzealous politicians.
My liberty, my interests and consequently my civil rights were ignored because some ambitious governors saw an opportunity to use an age-old political tactic: fear. Christie and my governor in Maine, Paul LePage, decided to disregard medical science and the constitution in hopes of advancing their careers.

In her piece for the Guardian, Hickox writes that Christie and LePage bet that, by multiplying the existing fear and misinformation about Ebola a disease most Americans know little about they could ultimately manipulate everyone and proclaim themselves the protectors of the people by protecting the public from a disease that hasnt killed a single American.

(32,969 posts)Must have PO-ed Christie that he couldn't yell at her in person. She file a lawsuit yet against either of those 2 creeps?
she's right and I love her speaking out on this.

(2,957 posts)Note how Ebola suddenly and completely dropped from the headlines after the election.
Although there were a few missteps early on - and very minor ones that were mostly communications issues rather than actual operational shortcomings - the administration ultimately set in place the protocols to keep this at bay in the US. And it totally worked. It worked so smoothly, in fact, that no one noticed.
Maybe in future crises, Obama should make it look like more of a challenge and a struggle to address. That'll draw more attention to what he's doing. This "making-it-look-easy" schtick may be better for America, but it kind of backfires because it provides a period of quiet vacuum that the Republicans exploit with their trouble-making noise and 6th grade logic.
Shit.
